Went to the humane society to adopt a cat. First, when you walk in there is a desk and a sign in sheet, so we signed in and waited our turn. After awhile, we asked them should we wait here and they said yes. When our turn came up, they told us to go back and look at the cats and come back and sign in and wait again. So, if you go there, go right back to the animals when you get there, then sign in after you've selected three animals you would like to visit.
We picked out a female domestic shorthair, they told me it was up to date on shots, but had to get neutered and sold me a certificate. Cost was over $120 at the Humane Socitey for adoption, microchip, etc. They did have a nice used carrier that they included for $12. so that was a plus.
Took the cat to Lakeforest Animal Hospital for mandatory check up and found out she needed distemper and rabies shots. They also asked if I wanted the Feline Lukemia Virus innoculation and I agreed since it is highly recommended for shelter cats, (this should be at least mentioned at time of adoption). So, with pain management, hospitalization, etc etc, the bill was over $300. And expect to pay over $150 for "other" expenses when you get a female cat neutered in Montgomery County.
Be sure to check the shot records for expiration dates etc. at time of adoption.
I realize the Humane Socitey has a tough job on a limited budget but I can see no-cost inprovements that can be made.
