- The Department of Forensic Science, also known as DFS, is a forensic laboratory system that serves medical examiners, attorneys, and the state and local law enforcement agencies in Virginia. Established in 2005, it is approved by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board. The department manages a staff of more than 300 employees. Its analytical disciplines include latent prints, trace evidence, and forensic biology and toxicology. The department operates Central Laboratory, which maintains a photo processing section that develops and prints crime scene and autopsy photographs. It has a breath alcohol division that conducts recertification classes in the Richmond, Fairfax, Tidewater, Waynesboro, Roanoke, South Hill and Bristol areas in Virginia. The Department of Forensic Science offers bloodstain pattern analysis services. The department s forensic training section conducts laboratory tours to police departments. It also offers fingerprinting and forensic imaging services.
