After completing his medical degree from the prestigious Keck School of Medicine of USC, Dr. Virden began a long and grueling career as a general surgery resident and then took on additional training to become a plastic surgeon. During his residency, he steered his own 3 boys to the football field to enjoy with them the joy of football. Dr. Virden served as the Assistant Coach to his son Matthew’s team while finishing his residency at the UC San Diego Medical Center. There, he coached for the Rancho Bernardo Pop Warner League. Dr. Virden then moved to Reno to begin his own private practice. He was Assistant Coach to his middle son, Tyler’s, teams in the Reno Pop Warner divisions. “I felt it was important to be a part of my sons’ experiences, and to enjoy teaching the teamwork and the rewards of dedication and careful mastery of fundamentals,” Coach Virden says.
Wound Care
Since a local anesthetic is used, there should be minimal pain and discomfort; therefore, pain medication usually isn’t required. If there’s any pain, over-the-counter medication can be taken. Most patients can return to work and normal activities by the following day. Strenuous exercise and activities should be avoided for about 1 – 3 weeks after surgery. If stitches are used, they can be removed about 4 – 14 days afterwards. By following proper wound care instructions, the skin should heal smooth and flat to blend seamlessly with the normal skin.

Reconstructive Surgery
Mole and skin growth removal is an outpatient procedure that is performed right in the office. Before a growth removal, the area with be numbed with a local anesthetic. Then, starting from the bottom of the growth or lesion, thin, horizontal layers of the tumor will be carefully removed. As each layer is removed, a sample will be submitted for a biopsy. After all signs of abnormal growths are removed, the wound will be assessed to determine the best way to close it and make it as cosmetically appealing as possible. For some patients, stitching up the wound with sutures is enough. In other cases, reconstructive surgery will be needed to minimize scarring and help the wound blend in seamlessly with the rest of the skin.

Eyelid Surgery
For upper eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon will make the incision within the natural fold of the eyelid. The incision will be extended outward as much as possible in order to address the extraneous skin folds located on the outside of the upper lid. After the incision is carefully made, the surgeon will remove the excess fat and skin. Afterwards, the incision will be closed with absorbable sutures, which do not require removal by the surgeon.

Laser Resurfacing
