It is not uncommon for affected patients to develop associated arthritis (psoriatic arthritis). Dr. Newman enjoys all aspects of dermatology practice, with special interests in skin cancer surgery (including Mohs surgery), infectious diseases, and inflammatory diseases of the skin. In addition to keeping current on dermatologic innovations, Dr. Newman has published several articles in scientific journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Archives of Dermatology. Dr. Newman held faculty positions as a Clinical Instructor at UC Davis Medical Center and at the Puget Sound Veterans Administration Hospital as a Clinical Assistant Professor of the University of Washington.

In situations where the cancer is relatively small, your dermatologist will surgically excise the cancerous flesh, then reconstruct the area. In more extreme cases, where the cancer is larger or has spread to other areas of the body, measures such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be recommended.
Radiation Therapy

Wound Care
People love these topical antibiotics but dermatologists do not. The problem is a very high frequency of contact allergic responses (10-15%). If you develop an allergy, the treated area grows red, itchy, tender, and possibly weepy. You can develop an allergy even if you’ve never had a problem with these medications before. Paradoxically, when an allergy develops, people believe the area is infected even though it’s the medication making the situation worse. Petrolatum (Vaseline) is a much better bet than topical antibiotics for minor cuts, scrapes and burns. We routinely recommend petrolatum instead of topical antibiotics for post-operative wound care.
Mohs Surgery
Most insurance policies cover the costs of Mohs surgery and the reconstruction of the resultant surgical defect. Please contact your insurance carrier directly for the most current payment information relative to this surgery. The insurance billing department in our office can also assist you.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Neuromodulators are a great option at improving both fine lines and wrinkles. These products are derived from neuromodulating proteins, precisely inhibiting localized muscle contractions implicated in wrinkle formation. Effects of treatment usually last between 3-6 months for most patients, with some studies indicating long term improvement with repeated treatments.
Plastic Surgery
After the skin cancer is removed, Dr. Newman repairs the resulting defect to restore the function and appearance of the surgical site. Dr. Newman has extensive training and experience in the repair and reconstruction of surgical defects on the face and other body sites. Often, with small cancers, the repair is accomplished by simply bring the wound edges together to create a linear closure. With more difficult or large cancers, plastic surgery techniques such as flaps and grafts may be employed. If you have questions regarding surgical repairs after Mohs surgery, please ask Dr. Newman.

Commonly referred to as the non-surgical facelift, dermal fillers provide volume and lift to reverse the natural signs of aging.

Tanning beds are not a safe alternative to outdoor tanning; in fact, both can increase your risk of skin cancer.

Dr. Meeker was born and raised in Tacoma and Puyallup, Washington. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 2007 with a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. Dr. Meeker received his medical training at West Virginia University School of Medicine where he also completed his internship and residency. Dr. Meeker join Puyallup Dermatology in September, 2017.

If your skin is very dry (especially if you have eczema), you should take action to reduce skin moisture loss. The skin produces intrinsic moisturizers (some people more, others less). Hygiene routines, solvent exposure, and hot water exposure strip these natural protectants from the skin, leading to increased dryness. To reduce loss of natural moisturizers, try a less drying soap (Dove, unscented, for example), and use less of it. There is no need to work up a lather all over like they do in commercials. Use soap only on areas that need extra help to get clean. Arms, legs, back, chest and abdomen generally do fine with water alone. Water temperature is also an important consideration. Although a hot shower feels refreshing, hotter water strips more natural moisturizers from the skin than cold water.
Lesions
Like warts, molluscum contagiosum (MC) is caused by a poxvirus. MC generally affects young children and young adults. The infection is harmless and self-limited; however it may take years for the lesions to resolve spontaneously. The lesions appear on any skin area, though in young adults, a distribution on genital skin if often seen. The appearance ranges from small (<1/4 inch) papules, skin colored, with a small central depression (umbilication), to larger, red, tender papules. The larger red papules result from recognition of the infection by the body’s immune system. In other words, when this happens, it’s generally a good sign.

Chemical Peels are a safe and highly effective treatment for a variety of skin conditions such as uneven skin tone and texture, chronic sun damage, fine lines, and acne.

The cause of allergic contact dermatitis can often be identified with skin tests. For example, individuals may develop allergic sensitivity to nickel in jewelry, rubber in shoes, leather or latex in gloves, or fragrances in creams and lotions. These and many other chemical sensitivities can be identified using contact allergy testing, also called patch testing.
