Oral Cancer Screening
Many people assume that going to the dentist for routine checkups is just to make sure you don’t have any cavities. However, these appointments examine much more than just the health of your dental structure. In fact, we provide oral cancer screenings as part of your routine checkups at Powell Dental, making these visits potentially lifesaving. With the number of cases of oral cancer continuing to grow each year, it’s vital that you and your loved ones receive regular oral cancer screenings.

Teeth Cleaning
Regular dental cleanings require most dentists to use a traditional scraping instrument to remove plaque and tartar accumulations from around teeth and the gum line. Now, there is a safe, effective, and painless alternative Dr. Shults can use – the Cavitron. This device promotes a more comfortable experience by using high-frequency sound waves to gently remove tartar and leave you looking and feeling better than when you arrived.
Fluoride Treatment
For decades, fluoride has provided a proven cavity solution that comes straight from nature, which is why you’ll often find it added to toothpaste and community water sources. Whenever the teeth are exposed to this mineral, fluoride strengthens it and may repair minor damage with remineralizing ions. At the end of regular checkups, we can give you and your loved ones an applied fast-release concentrated fluoride varnish that is readily adherent to your enamel to ensure your smiles stay strong and cavity-free between appointments.
Dental Sealants
The back teeth, with their wide and deeply grooved surfaces, provide the perfect places for plaque, bacteria, and food particles to become trapped and cause cavities. This is especially true for small children who are still learning to brush effectively! Dental sealants enable us to shield these vulnerable teeth using a thin, clear layer of a composite resin that quickly hardens into a protective barrier. They take minutes to apply but can provide up to a year of round-the-clock cavity defense.

Fillings
Rather than fixing a small cavity with a dark gray amalgam filling, we can repair it with a composite resin that has been specially color-matched to a patient’s enamel. This helps the restoration become practically invisible within the mouth. In the end, you get a tooth that looks great, feels better, and can be trusted to last.
Resin Composite
Next, we will roughen the surface of your tooth using a special substance. This will allow the bonding agent to adhere to your tooth and help the resin stay in place. Do not worry, as this does not hurt in any way. Using the composite resin, which is like a putty material, we will place it on the tooth’s surface and begin to shape it accordingly. Once we have it sculpted, we will use a curing light to harden the resin into place.

Dr. Phillips graduated from Sahuaro High School in Tucson in 1988, and he went on to attend the University of Arizona, graduating with a B.S. in Microbiology in 1992. He then continued his education at Oregon Health Sciences University and received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1997. After graduating from dental school, he practiced general dentistry for five years in Tucson.
