Dental Care

Vaccination
After adopting a new best friend, it is vital to get a full examination to ensure your new family member’s health. We will discuss ways to avoid problems later in life. Be sure to bring any prior immunization and health information so that we can tailor the care needed. We complete a full exam and go over any previous history for your pet to determine the best vaccination and testing recommendations specific to your pet’s medical and “lifestyle” needs.
Nutritional Counseling
We provide physical examinations, environmental and nutritional consultation, as well as emergency and critical care for your exotic pets. Our facility includes a dedicated avian and exotics ward with temperature controlled cages that allow us to monitor your pet’s condition while minimizing stress. Some of the species we see are birds, gerbils, hamsters, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, degus, prairie dogs, frogs/toads, other amphibians, and reptiles such as lizards, snakes, turtles and tortoises, and occasional wildlife. We are happy to see exotics referrals from other veterinary offices.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We can help you choose an appropriate vaccine schedule and preventives based on the specific needs of your pet and your own particular environment. We will review with you the best ways to control fleas, ticks and prevent deadly heartworm disease.
Pain Management
Animals instinctually hide pain so we generally don’t hear a peep out of our pets until the pain is so bad they cannot hide it anymore. We feel that it is very important to identify when an animal is painful. Minimizing an animal’s discomfort will improve the recovery process, whether from illness, surgery or injury. Best of all, because it reduces stress and increases a sense of well being, and may even help your pet live longer and more comfortably.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Heart Disease Treatment
This diagnostic technique isused to visualize tendons, fetuses, internal organs and other structures to capture their size, shape and any pathological lestions with real time images in a practically three dimensional manner. If there is evidence of heart disease, then an echocardiogram is often indicated. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart that allows the cardiologist to look inside the heart, find abnormalities and assess severity of disease.
Cancer Treatment
Dr. Kathrene Barker is a native New Yorker who grew up in the beautiful Hudson Valley and has been working with animals for the past 20 years. Prior to attending veterinary school, Dr. Barker received a bachelor’s degree in veterinary management from SUNY Delhi and worked as a licensed veterinary technician in various areas of the veterinary medical field, including small animal, exotic animal and animal cancer practices, for over 10 years. With this experience, she excelled at St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Dr. Barker completed her clinical year at the University of Tennessee Veterinary School and is excited to be back in the Hudson Valley and joining the team at Creature Comforts.

Dental Surgery
Every time we see your pet, we will examine the teeth to keep you current on your pet’s oral health status. Taking care of your pet’s teeth isn’t just about a pretty smile and better smelling breath! Dental disease can cause more “wear-and-tear” affecting every organ in your pet via the bloodstream. We recommend brushing teeth daily and dental cleanings as needed to prevent the need for tooth extractions or any other oral surgery.

X-Ray
Our on-site, modern X-ray equipment provides high quality radiographs to aid in the quick diagnosis of many disorders.
Microchipping
We offer permanent microchip identification of your beloved pet. The procedure is quick and practically painless. A small microchip is permanently implanted under the skin of the neck area. This way, if your pet becomes lost, he or she is able to be identified even if they have lost their collar and ID tags!

Small Animal Vet
As a young adult, Dr. Duggan spent school breaks working and volunteering at small animal hospitals, goat and alpaca farms, and at Guiding Eyes for the Blind. She graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology before attending Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts. It was there that Dr. Duggan rescued her first child Sarge, a coconut retriever. She finished her veterinary education at Louisiana State University. Since graduating, Dr. Duggan has practiced as a small animal veterinarian, eventually becoming chief of staff at her previous hospital. In that time she has adopted another dog, Ennis, fondly known as the chocolate piglet.
