Macular Degeneration
Dr. Ali Heaton, originally born and raised in central Montana has been an integral part of the local eye care community since 2010. Dr. Heaton has been heavily involved in the Idaho Optometric Physicians organization serving as the President in 2018, the Vice President in 2016, and the North Region Director from 2013-2016. She is a graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry and completed her undergrad at Carroll College (Go Saints!). Dr. Heaton specializes in medically focused eye exams including macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal conditions, and dry eye.

Cataracts
Due to the many changes in health care, North Idaho Eye Institute, Post Falls Eye Clinic, North Idaho Cataract & Laser Center and Coeur d’Alene Optical are finding that a large amount of our staff time and clinic resources are being spent on collecting fees instead of on patient focused tasks needed to provide you with total quality eye care. The intent of our payment policy is to help us dedicate more time to you and keep the costs of medical services to a minimum by reducing the cost of billing.

Eye Exam
During a pediatric eye exam, you can expect for your child to have their vision checked at near and distance, eye alignment checked (by momentarily covering up one eye) and eye movements checked as well as their three dimensional or stereovision. Your child will then be given eye drops to dilate his or her eyes and relax their ability to focus. These eye drops take 30 minutes to take effect and you should expect to spend 2-3 hours for the office visit. Your child will then have a dilated eye exam to look at the important structures in the back of the eye (retina and optic nerve) and will have their glasses prescription checked using a special light (retinoscope) and lenses to neutralize the eye.

Sara Brumbach Duke, M.D. is an Idaho native. She attended Willamette University for her undergraduate degree, received her doctorate from Creighton University School of Medicine, and completed her ophthalmology-surgical training at Loyola University Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Duke is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She has experience providing comprehensive medical and surgical care for eye conditions including cataracts, macular degeneration, oculoplastic/eyelid disorders, diabetic retinopathy, pterygium, uveitis, and glaucoma. Dr. Duke started her career in Chattanooga, TN, and returned to Idaho in 2014 to join the North Idaho Eye Institute and be closer to family and friends. Dr. Duke and her two boys enjoy spending time in the mountains where they can backpack and ski. Dr. Duke is committed to supporting the Idaho Youth Ranch and The Children’s Village locally, as well as working internationally by going on humanitarian trips to Peru.

General Surgery
We are a locally owned comprehensive eye care facility, originally founded by Dr. Roy Toyama in the 1960s. As the area and clinic grew, Dr. Toyama partnered with other local ophthalmologists and increased the scope of clinical and surgical services provided in our community. Under their vision and leadership, additional offices and physicians, as well as optometric providers, were incorporated.

Plastic Surgeons

Brow Lift
Our Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls doctors perform a variety of surgical procedures to treat common eyelid problems affecting normal eyelid function. Improper eyelid positioning can cause decreased vision, discomfort, redness, or tearing. These procedures include blepharoplasty (removal of excess eyelid skin), ptosis repair (eyelid lift), brow lift, entropion repair (eyelid turning in), and ectropion repair (eyelid turning out). We also diagnose and treat small eyelid growths or tumors. In some instances, referral to a fellowship trained oculoplastic specialist may be appropriate, and we work closely to coordinate these referrals when necessary.
Eyelid Surgery
North Idaho Cataract and Laser Center offers surgical excellence in a compassionate atmosphere. Our skilled surgeons have performed over 30,000 cataract and laser surgeries in our out-patient surgery center. Common procedures performed include: cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, treatments for ocular surface diseases, and laser eye surgeries for diseases like glaucoma and diabetes.
