Worse than Supermarket Chinese Food!

Well people, this was the absolute worst Asian food I have ever had in my life! I have eaten enough of it to know what these dishes are supposed to taste like and these were nearly inedible. I am not a food snob, just expecting something that was at least as good as the Chinese food at a supermarket deli! You'd think i couldn't miss. You'd think!

First, the Sweet and Sour Chicken was the scariest bloody color and the taste was blah. The chicken pieces that came with it were so greasy they were dripping! We also had a very bland Veggie Chow Mein: the sauce was like watery gravy and the tofu in it was as chewy as an old sponge (not that I eat those). The egg rolls tasted funny, too, and the sauce that came with my sons potstickers was very vinegary and he couldn't use it. I had to rescue my dinner with my own soy sauce at home, thank goodness I had some. I am throwing my leftovers away, sadly.

My husband liked his curry but I tasted it and I've had a lot better. All in all we were very disappointed. Mostly I thought the food was flavorless and way too greasy. The portions were decent and the vegetables were nice and crispy, to give them some credit. I would have liked some bean sprouts in my chow mein though.

Maybe I will try their Vietnamese fare, but I am a bit scared to be honest.

My foturne cookie said that tomorrow I will find what I have been searching for, which just may be a decent Chinese/Asian restaurant in Portland!

My Canh is a No Canh Do

This used to be one of my absolute favorites. But over the last six months (in three visits), twice I've found long black straight hair in my food (had to really push that out of my mind to go back again), and this last time, realized that they use MSG. I used to go there because not only was the food very good and fresh tasting, but I didn't get geeked out like I do at other Asian restaurants that do use MSG, and they used to have a sign by the front counter that said ""No MSG."" Last night when I ate there, I could feel those familiar signs that I had eaten MSG and I checked the menu -- it no longer made an MSG statement. I went to the front counter -- the sign was gone. I asked if they used MSG, they reluctantly said yes. I asked why. The woman just stared at me. I asked how long ago they switched, and she said, ""Oh, a long time ago."" Well, I could stand a hair or two, though that alone grossed me out. But even though the food is really good tasting and unique, I don't want MSG, and the meat portions in the dishes seem to be shrinking quite a bit anyway. Hair, MSG and lack of main ingredient. Won't be going back any time soon.

Rubberbands, anyone?

I'm not sure why this place got such great reviews. The atmosphere is not much to speak of and the food is just so-so stuff you could get anywhere. Their prices are decent and the service is prompt. But here's the thing that got me-- while I was eating my hot and sour soup, I bit down on something that was pretty hard to chew. Turns out it was a RUBBER BAND! IN MY SOUP! Needless to say, I didn't finish the soup. And I won't be going back to this place.

Skimped on the dishes

We tried this place after reading the reviews here but were a bit disappointed with the dishes. But, first of all, I'd like to complement them on a few things: portions were good and the staff was very friendly. We liked the decor b/c it was tasteful for an asian restaurant (somehow I've noticed asian places like to decorate the walls w/ tacky mis-matched pictures) and didn't feel like a cafeteria. And the prices were good. But I was quite disappointed when I ordered the Beef w/ Vegetables and Shrimp w/ Broccoli. There were barely any pieces of beef in the beef dish and for the shrimp dish, it was piled high w/ more broccoli than you could ever want but very few shrimp in it. It was too bad for us b/c we had already had a veggie dish so we basically ended up w/ THREE veggie dishes! And speaking of veggies, they used a lot of cabbage - the hugest chunks I've ever seen for stir fry , that is - so big that apparently it doesn' t soften enough when it gets cooked so some pieces were really hard to bite into. Maybe we would have different opinions if we ordered different dishes, but to me, skimping on the main ingredient is a big turn-off. I was just pretty disappointed after reading the good reviews. Overall, we prefer Zien Hong further up the street on Sandy Blvd - also a viet-chinese restaurant (small place but good food).

affordable and yummy

a complete stranger recommended this place to me in conversation and I had to try it after reading the reviews. There are plenty of choices for non meat eaters like me and I can't wait to try them all. The portions are generous and the prices are affordable. I got a small papaya salad and I still have leftovers for tomorrow! the salt and pepper beans and tofu were delicious. nice staff and food was made super quick!

Try The Specials!

Though it's hard to not order the delicious pho every time, check the board for daily specials because they're often lovely. The crispy quail, the whole fish, the chicken with tomato and basil have all been standouts. The pepper salted green beans are also amazing - like a yummy asian french fry. The staff are friendly and fast.

I love this restaurant and go often! Best Pho in town with more veggies than usual. The staff are above and beyond friendly and the service is fast. Very highly recommended.

Has to be one of the best!

My Canh is one of the best Chinese Restaurants a lot. My ex got me hooked on it and now my fiancee and I go all the time. If we can't go, I work close by so I get it to go. They have a friendly staff, always courteous, the food is always consistent. They have never dissapointed my friends and family. Must try their Salad rolls and Mongolian Beef.

Nice place w/ good Chinese

Haven't ordered from the Vietnamiese side of the menu, but the food from the chinese menu was very good, in large part due to the freshness of the ingredients and that it wasn't just a preprepared dish that was slopped onto a plate. The atmosphere is refreshing and relaxing. Servers were attentive and polite.

Great find in Hollywood

We've eaten several times at My Canh and have always been impressed. The food is always fresh and very consistent and prices are extremely reasonable. The staff is courteous, prompt and always friendly. You can't go wrong by going to My Canh.
