30 yrs of great food, decent service most of the time

We have eaten at House of Louie for almost 30 has become a family favorite and we have celebrated many happy occasions here. After being away from Portland for a few years, we came back to see that the establishment had ""shrunk"" in size and was not nearly as busy as it used to be. We still come for the Mandarin Chicken & Chow Fun (hard to find in many chinese restaurants) and have never once been disappointed by the food. Service used to be excellent, it has faltered on occasion, but the food is always worth it. Sad to see so many bad reviews; guess we have been very lucky with our visits here.

Usually good

I've been there when the service was pretty bad, and I've been there when the service was excellent. The variety of food is pretty good, but not completely amazing. It's a good place to go for a tasty meal, but it isn't the best in Portland

We used to eat here often. Like most Chinese restaurants this one could use a good deep cleaning in the dining room. We were fine until a cockroach crawled across my son's plate. We got up and left. Didn't even pay. Haven't been back since.

Great Portland Dim Sum

We really enjoyed our food. We went to the House Louie for Mother's Day, they had the standard service and it was wonderful. The food was fresh and clean, the seafood was wonderful. I would have preffered that the sauces were on the table, however when we asked for them, they were brought immediately.

The variation was perfect, we had lots to choose from and the carts came around regularly. We had several different types of food the Ginger Chicken was fantastic my daughters asked for more of that dish.

We will be back to the House of Louie.

Great Dim Sun - Pleasantly surprised

We didn't set out to have Dim Sum here but was disappointed by the feel of Fong Chang so we walked into House of Louie. Definitely a great surprise. The previous reviews weren't that glowing. I must say I have eaten dim sum at many places and this rates right up there. The service was prompt and courteous. Even better - the wait staff serving the Dim Sum spoke english so they could clearly tell you what was being served. The food was fresh and of high quality. The only disappointment was that we filled up so fast on the first few carts we were too full to try some of the better dishes which came out later like ginger chicken, fried lobster tail, shimp stuffed pepper..... I am DEFINITELY going back to eat Dim Sum here again.

great service, average food

We figured we'd try the slightly garish House one afternoon for dinner. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful; when I asked if they have shrimp in their wontons the waitress went and asked the chef just to be sure! The eggrolls (which are really spring rolls) are outstanding. The tea was delicious as well, and we were sure we were in for a treat. Sadly, the food was all downhill from there. The soup was average at best, the rice was bland and smooshy, the pork was dry, the chicken was greasy. It was edible, but you can get similar quality at a fast food type Chinese place. If we're ever in the mood for spring rolls while we're in Chinatown we wouldn't hesitate to stop in, but we'd be very leery of the rest of menu. The price was decent, though, the two of us ate for about $20 with soups and appetizers. We've just had better Chinese food elsewhere.

Horrible experience

My best friend and I were out for a day in China Town. Ending here after working up quite an appatite. The food was spectacular... Until we found a METAL SHAVING in her food... An inch long and spiraled like cast-off from a lathe. Scared the heck out of us. We tell the waitress who tells someone else (never identified themselves) and she comes over to look at it then asks her 'well what do you want me to do about it?' Offered us more food but at that point neither one of us are touching something out of that kitchen. A piece of a spatula breaks off, some small piece of plastic no one notices, even a hair I wont get sick at... But a piece of METAL!!! We went in there because they had a plaqard naming them as 2005 winner of best chineese in town. Never going back. Not only was it a spooky experience but the staff was rude once we pointed out the dangerouse material lurking in her chowmein. They gave us 50% off the tab. AFTER asking us 3 times 'well what can I do about it"" in a very snotty tone. Never going back. I'd rather try one of the other 50 places in the same block than go back.

anywhere but here

The only upside is they charge 40 for tea rather than other places that charge 1.00
Did a comparison jaunt with House of Louie and Fong Chong.
Ordered the Pork Shue Mai and the Steamed BBQ steamed bun.
The BBQ steamed bun arrived well, but upon tearing into it, it turned into the consistency of shredded pulpy paper.
I've never seen anything like it.

Left after 10 minutes, and only 5.00 for two dishes and tea.
The servers are quite lovely, and have genuine smiles on their face.

My wife and I were married in the far east. So we know of what we speak. On our recent and first visit to Portland we visited among other things Astoria, OR and the Spruce Goose. House of Louie was the highlight of the trip and is what we still talk about. It is very charmng, authentic and the food was great. I had sweet and sour pork and it was loaded with pork. It really reminded us of our experiences in Japan.

I t must seem suprising but igot to say i were you i go to other places to get your meal.First the food is tiny and dont have as much stuff in it as back than before they ve changed the owner. Second it tast so bad and people i pay for the food dont i deserve something better. Ok, even though it taste bad the prices are just too high for the kind of food they serve!!! I f i were u i ll go to some other places. I am not trying to be mean but i m just telling the truth. If they change their envirerment i might still got back however is that even possible???
