Melanie Connors is a board-certified family nurse practitioner. Committed to patient care, Melanie has been a practicing nurse practitioner in family practice in the Portland, Maine, area since 2007. After eight years in the veterinary biotech industry, working in hematology research and development/technical support, she returned to graduate school and earned her master of science degree in nursing from the University of Southern Maine. Melanie, a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Maine Nurse Practitioner Association, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maine prior to receiving her advanced degree in nursing. Maybe you’re just unsure because you feel healthy. Maybe you’ve lost sight of the fact that colonoscopy protects even healthy people against the serious risk of colorectal cancer. Or, maybe, convincing a loved one of the importance of good colon health is a challenge.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Dr. Goldman is board-certified in gastroenterology. He graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his medical degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and then returned to Philadelphia for his residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Goldman completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Boston Medical Center, where he was recognized as the BMC Teaching Fellow of the Year. Prior to joining Portland Gastroenterology Center, Dr. Goldman spent nine years as a partner, and then as president, of Gastroenterology Affiliates of Southeastern Massachusetts. His practice areas of interest include colon cancer prevention, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and management of upper GI disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease. In his free time, Dr. Goldman enjoys distance running, mountaineering, and traveling to remote areas of the world including Ushuaia, Svalbard and New Zealand.

Dr. Baffy is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and obtained a master’s degree in public health from Drexel University. She then studied medicine in her native country, Hungary, at Semmelweis University. Following medical school, Dr. Baffy returned to Philadelphia for her internal medicine residency at Drexel University College of Medicine. She joins us directly from her gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. During her training, Dr. Baffy received the prestigious Hassan Loutfi, MD, Distinguished Fellow Award. Her clinical interests include general gastroenterology with a specific focus on women’s health. She is joined in Maine by her husband and three children, with whom she enjoys spending time outdoors.
Gastroenterology
You will be asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to your procedure’s scheduled start time. Masks are not required; but if you or your ride are having symptoms of an upper respiratory illness, you may be asked to wear a mask. Rides are permitted to wait in the reception area. You will take the elevator to the 4th floor where you will check in with front desk reception to begin your admission process. Your admission nurse will bring you from reception to an admission bay where you will be admitted and meet your physician. Please have the phone number of your ride available to provide to staff. We encourage you to ask your ride to add our phone number into their personal phone 207-773-7964 and title as Portland Gastroenterology. Your ride will be called 15-20 minutes before you are ready to be discharged. We ask that your ride not be more than 15-20 minutes away. After your procedure, you will go to recovery where your ride will be allowed to join you, if you wish; and you will speak with the doctor prior to leaving.

Endoscopy
The Endoscopy Center on the fourth floor of our new building provides additional space and privacy for our patients. Its design reflects our concern for your comfort as well as your care. There are 22 beds (one is shown above) and six state-of-the-art procedure rooms in which we perform colonoscopies and upper endoscopies. We invite your family and friends to enjoy our guest café and comfortable waiting room with wi-fi, and easy access to walking trails, restaurants and shopping.

Dr. Rolshud is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. After graduating summa cum laude from Hunter College, he received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and served his residency at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Rolshud completed a Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins University and an Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship Program at Columbia University. His areas of special interest are pancreaticobiliary medicine and the application of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP (a procedure for the examination or treatment of the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts that combines the use of X-rays and an endoscope), endoscopic ultrasound, deep enteroscopy, endoscopic mucosal resection and radiofrequency ablation. Dr. Rolshud is a clinical assistant professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and a member of the Maine Medical Center medical staff.
