General Info: After four years of active duty in the United States Air Force, where he served as Chief Ophthalmologist at Offutt Air Base, Nebraska, Dr. Brian V. Favero was recruited by the Port Huron Eye Clinic. He obtained a position as staff ophthalmologist in 1994. Upon closure of the Port Huron Eye Clinic, efforts began to open Port Huron Ophthalmology, which officially opened on January 27, 1997. The facility offers complete comprehensive ophthalmic services. Patients of Port Huron Ophthalmology include infants all the way to adults in very mature years. We continue to build our practice through marketing efforts, our good reputation, and a hard working staff. We provide our patients with the most up-to-date eye care and technology available.

Glaucoma

Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common condition in older adults and the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in people over the age of 65. Macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for the crisp, detailed vision needed for reading or driving. As we age, the tissue in the eye responsible for central vision slowly begins to deteriorate which can significantly affect a patient's quality of life.
Laser Eye Surgery
Dr. Favero remains dedicated to bringing new technology, surgical advancements, and treatments to the Port Huron community. He is currently the only ophthalmologist performing LASIK, Corneal Transplants, and DSAEK in St. Clair County. In keeping with the ever changing medical technology, Dr. Favero continues to go the extra mile to offer extensive alternatives in eye care. He and his staff strive to give patients the comfortable, professional quality of eye care they deserve.
Cataracts
A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye. A normal lens is clear and lets light pass to the back of the eye. Cataracts block some of that light and as they develop, it becomes increasingly difficult for the person to see. Cataracts are a normal part of aging. Cataracts can be corrected with surgery.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Your visit at the surgery center will last approximately 2- 2 ½ hours and most are able to go home using the eye that just had surgery. Your vision, although improved, will take several days to settle. You will be able to resume most normal activities the day following your surgery, being careful not to rub or bump the eye. It will take a few months for the eye to completely heal from cataract surgery.
Eye Exam
If you are scheduled for a complete eye exam you will be given drops to dilate your eyes. This provides a clear view for the doctor to examine your eye. Most people do not have difficulties from these drops. Dilation blurs your near vision and will make you light sensitive. If you feel you may have trouble driving you may want to bring someone with you. Sunglasses will be helpful, if you have some be sure to bring them. A typical dilation can last approximately 6-8 hours. Eye drops are available to reverse the dilation more quickly and decrease your dilation time to approximately 2 hours. A typical complete eye exam will be approximately 1 ½ hours.

Dr. Brian V. Favero received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska in 1985. After completing a residency in internal medicine from the University of Nevada-Reno in 1988, he found he had a passion for helping people with their vision and decided to specialize in Ophthalmology. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1991. From 1991 through 1994 Dr. Favero served as Chief Ophthalmologist in the United States Air Force at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that weakens the blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina (the light-sensitive lining in the back of the eye where vision is focused). These weak vessels can leak, swell or develop thin branches, causing a loss of vision. Changes to your vision may not be noticeable at first. But in its advanced stages, the disease can cause blurred or cloudy vision, floaters and blind spots – and, eventually, blindness. This damage is irreversible. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye complication and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. Macular edema, which is leaking fluid that causes blurred vision, often occurs with diabetic retinopathy.

Eyelid Surgery
Non-surgical treatments for dry eye include blinking exercises, increasing humidity at home or work, and use of artificial tears or moisturizing ointment. If these methods fail, small punctal plugs may be inserted in the corners of the eyes to limit tear drainage, or the drainage tubes in the eyes may be surgically closed. Eyelid surgery is also a solution if an eyelid condition is causing your dry eyes.
