- We began as Ristorante DiLullo when we opened our doors in May of 1979, under the guidance of renowned cookbook author Marcella Hazan. It was an opening like no other in Philadelphia. Joe DiLullo had envisioned a grand New York style Italian restaurant in Fox Chase, his hometown in northeast Philadelphia. People came from everywhere to experience the delicious Northern Italian fare and the crisp clean Milan look. My fiancee' and I booked this establishment for our rehearsal dinner because we knew the food was good and we were on a budget. When both myself and my mother called to get a price per head, we were quoted $28.50 per head. That was in our budget and we booked it. We were called by the owner, Toto, and he told us he would make it a very nice evening and he would take care of us. Unfortunately, we did not know what ""take care of us"" meant in his vocabulary. When we received our bill for that evening, it came to $2,234.00 We were in disbelief...why was the evening so expensive. When my fiancee called the next day to find out why the bill was so high, we were told by Toto that he decided to charge us $40.00 per head and $1,000.00 of the bill was for the bar tab alone!!! Not only did ever discuss with us if we wanted wine poured, he took it upon himself to serve wine, and pick expensive bottles of wine at that. We were shocked. My fiancee asked to please do they right thing and he called my fiancee a scumbag.

This restaurant is a gem in a neighborhood where one would not expect it to exist. We have been eating there for many many years and have never been disappointed. The food is northern Italian and quite sophisticated but not pretentious. The service is excellent. Toto, the owner is an old world gentleman.
