Family Practice
As a licensed optometrist in Pennsylvania and Alaska since 2010, Dr. Edmonds began providing comprehensive eye care which has grown to include the specialty areas of Low Vision and Advanced Contact Lens Fitting and Management. He utilizes skills in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating of all disorders that affect the eye or vision. In addition to training in eye diseases and disorders, Dr. Edmonds is also taking an Interest in the scope of public health going beyond eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and Keratoconus and into the counseling and early detection of diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Edmonds split his first 4 years of practice to provide eye-care throughout southwestern Alaska and his home base here in Philadelphia. In remote distant villages he brought much needed services through small planes and snowmobiles to equip the native population with glasses, contact lenses, and ocular health examinations. After four years of working between Philadelphia, PA and Alaska, he has grounded himself with Edmonds Eye Associates and is happy to join the family practice full time. He is currently serving as the President of the Chester-Delaware Society of Optometry. He lectures on low vision and rural community health. He is the co-author of the Chapter on Low Vision in a clinical book, Wills Eye Institute 5-minute Ophthalmology Consult published in 2012.

At Edmonds Eye Associates, we offer comprehensive exams that cover all aspects of your vision and eye health. We start with questions regarding your daily life and any symptoms you may be experiencing at home or at work. We also take record of your vision, medications, and overall health. Then our optometrists perform a visual exam to take a look at your eye and eyelids. This is done with magnification and light, and may require dilating of the pupils. We also record your eye pressure with tonometry, which is an important test to identify patients at risk of developing glaucoma.

Macular Degeneration
The Edmonds Rehabilitation System for central vision loss has evolved from the doctor’s personal work in the field of clinical Low Vision at the Wills Eye Hospital and the Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These clinical settings have provided a preponderance of geriatric macular degeneration patients referred for low vision service by retina specialists and other tertiary eye care providers. This population often presents without well define goals or specific desired tasks. The medical eye condition is often fresh and may be unstable. They basically want to “see better” or function at a higher level.

Cataracts
Minor Ocular Pathology: There are many pathological eye problems that can do not rule out the use of contact lenses but can make the successful wear more of a challenge. These problems include, dry eye, corneal dystrophy, blepharitis, and cataracts. Patients that use glaucoma drops may also have to have a specialized contact lens program.
Cataract Surgery
The geriatric macular degeneration community has largely been frustrated by the decline in their visual function and by the lack of a positive outlook by their eye care providers. Many have had cataract surgery followed by laser or other treatments yet have not achieved the desired outcome. Others have been seen by traditional low vision clinics and have multiple low vision devises but no real understanding of their vision deficit or a meaningful framework in which to use their menagerie of aids.

The doctors at Edmonds Eye Associates have been leaders in the field of vision rehabilitation for over thirty years. There are two broad areas rehabilitation; The first is for geriatric central vision loss primarily from Age Related Macular Degeneration or other disorders of central vision, such as diabetic retinopathy or optic atrophy. The second area is for other vision problems such as visual field loss, eye movement disorders or perceptional vision problems as seen in stoke, neurologically disorders or acquired brain injury.

Concussion is a common problem in everyday life. From a sports injury, motor vehicle accident, military service or even a simple slip and fall can result in a concussion. For many years, doctors failed to diagnose a concussion after a mild bump on the head. MRI studies were normal and patents were advised to “shake it off” and move on. Today, we realize that even a minor head injury can result in a concussion and that disability from a concussion is cumulative. We have also defined “Post Concussion Syndrome” that includes a host of vision and eye related problems that makes reading and close work uncomfortable or impossible.

Dr. Sciortino graduated from Rutgers University – New Brunswick in 2017 with a degree in Biological Sciences. He was an active participant in research involving visual scanning techniques utilized by patients with Macular Degeneration. During his attendance of the Southern College Optometry, he was an active member in various service organizations to promote the field of Optometry. His interests include: Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurorehabilitation as well as Dry Eye.
