We have been eating at Frank's for about twenty five years now. In the past, the lines would be out the door, you would have to give your name and wait for a table. All those days are gone now and it is obvious why. Frank's was always known for LARGE portions and great home made soup. The owner is now cutting corners so, that the soup is plain water, only luke warm, and the large portions of Chicken Parm that Frank's was known for, have now shrunk to almost half the size they were. When we went we always lately had to bring along some chicken bullion to add to our soup. Sandwiches are also not a good choice since the meat is rationed out and an Italian Hoagie that used to be great, now only has one slice of each lunch meat, making it a bread sandwich. A tossed salad is also rationed out to one piece of tomato, one thin slice of cucumber, etc. The owner makes the waitresses take the tossed salad into the kitchen to ask the cook for a slice of tomato to make sure they don't give out more than one. If you plan on using the coupons that the owner puts in the Northeast times or on his own website for Frank's, you must pay with cash only since he does not want to pay the credit card company's fee. Also you must have the coupon from the website printed out or he won't accept it from your phone. Yes, that is how bad it has become at Franks. It is a shame since it was always a nice place to eat. The help is always upset since the owner is constantly hounding them in front of the customers. I feel sorry for them. The owner is not Italian, he is Greek. Don't waste your money or time going to Franks. The prices are very high considering the quality and portions. The owner is not taking the interest that he once did, and cutting corners is certainly not the way to go.
While in Philadelphia on a business trip my husband and I went into Porcini's Restaurant. The food, service and hospitality of the staff and owners is absolutely amazing! Everything was perfectly cooked and flavored for a truly mouth watering experience! I have never wanted a meal to last forever as much as I did this one. We both found ourselves savoring the taste long after the food passed through our mouths. The owners (two brothers) make you feel like family, taking the time out of the kitchen to visit with you and have real conversations. The personability of the staff and owners, taste of the food and reasonable prices makes this a restaurant one we would make a special trip to Philadelphia for! This food made me remember what good home made Italian cooking really is! No more chain Italian restaurants for us! It is obvious why it made Zagat's 2008 Top Italian Restaurant list! If you are looking for an amazing restaurant with incredible home made food, reasonable prices, personality and old time friendliness - visit Porcini's in Philadelphia - it is in a class all its own! The reason I give this school a mixed review isn't because the teachers aren't great. My daughter attends this school and she absolutely loves the teachers and her chosen course of study. The teachers are very knowledgeable and my kiddo has learned so much and looks forward to each day enthusiastically. The problem is the administration, in particular, the financial aide department. I understand that, during the aide procurement time of the year, they are very busy but phone calls go unanswered for weeks if you're lucky enough to get to a voice mailbox that isn't already full! Both this year and last I had to resort to leaving stern (yet still polite) voice messages and when finally returned the staff had very nasty attitudes. All in all, we highly recommend this school just expect to spend many frustrating hours unless you are fortunate enough to be able to afford to just pay the tuition. Unfortunately though, at some point, you will still have to deal with some department of the administration.
My co-worker has been raving to me about the new chef at La Famiglia that has just moved here from Naples, Italy. So I thought it seemed appropriate to take her there for diner on Friday after work for her birthday. Fridays at our office are casual, we both had on jeans and a nice blouse, and at first I was worried that I would be under-dressed so I brought a change of clothes with me. My friend kept assuring me that I was fine so I went as I was. When I got there everyone was dressed casually so I immediately felt comfortable. It was a long week and the start of a long weekend so the first thing I did was look at the wine list, it was absolutely exquisite and we ordered what I’d say was one of the best bottles of wine I ever had. For diner I ordered the Vitello con Fontina, it was fabulous! The portion was huge so when I brought home the leftovers my husband had some, he was so impressed that he made reservations for this weekend!
My husband and I were going to attend a function at one of the sports arenas, so I did an online search for a place to have dinner. Since we were driving from Allentown to South Philadelphia, we wanted to have a specific destination in mind and since it was our 27th wedding anniversary, we wanted a 'sit down meal' not a 'cheesesteak wit'. The review I read stated this establishment would make you feel at home. This was more than accurate. From the owner on down to the bus boys were on the spot with what we needed before we knew what we needed. My husband, never a big pasta eater, had a chicken and sausage scallopini dish with penne and even he wanted more. My veal parm, was thin, succulent and melt in your mouth good. And, when over heard by waitstaff that it was our anniversary, the owner himself wished us well. Well worth the excursion down the Turnpike, Blue Route AND Surekill Expressway for this meal alone.
A few weeks ago we were in Phila for a show at the Kimmel Center. Our friends suggested that we have dinner at Maggiano's. I must tell you it was a great experience, the food was delicious, the service was excellent and the ambiance was very nostalgia for us. The dinning experience was like being in my grandmothers kitchen on Sunday for dinner, the food and family just kept on coming. We thanked our friends for suggesting Maggiano's to us and in fact we are bringing back my brother and his family for dinner on Sunday, May 25 in the evening. We will be celebrating two birthdays and two graduations. What better place than Maggiano's to have great food and a wonderful family. Please try it, I know that you will like it. Mary Esposito
The best place I have ever eaten! To start, the wait staff was so incredibly friendly and helpful. We reserved the special wine cellar seats and I thought we might be forgotten down there but they gave us the exact amount of space to spend some alone time and checked up on our drinks the perfect amount of times and the complimentary apps and lemon chellos were a wonderful surprise! We ate all three courses as if we had never expereinced the likes of good food before. I would reccomended this place to ANYONE looking to have good well prepared quality food with amazing flaro and zest. First date, anniversary, party, fun nihgt out on the town, looking to get dressed up for no reason. This place has it all. We will deffinetly be back!
We went here for restaurant week. I got to this restaurant before the people I was eating with so I went to the bar. They had a good happy hour, where I got a martini. It was strong and tasted good. There are outside and inside seats. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. I had the fried egg plant and it was good. My entree was the gnocchi and it was a really big dish. I took half of it home so I could have room for dessert. The cannoli was really good! The other people I went with also raved about their dishes. If you park above the restaurant they will validate your parking. Definitely recommend this nice place.
With the weather getting warmer and my anniversary approaching, I’ve been trying to find a reasonably priced Italian restaurant with out-door seating in Old City. My husband was laid off recently so we haven’t had the money to get out dinner in quite the while. A friend who assured me the prices were great and the food was to-die-for recommended me to Panini. After eating there this week I now know she wasn’t lying. What she forgot to mention was the comfortable, friendly atmosphere, and the great service! The experience was excellent and we will defiantly be spending more time there!
If I were to write a review I would write about three topics; atmosphere, food, and service. The atmosphere is extremely romantic and calm and is perfect for bringing your loved one for a nice romantic dinner. The food was outstanding both times I have been there and is prepared perfectly. The service has been amazing each time we go there from the tableside made salads to the waiters and waitresses. Our waiter Keith was extremely quick, polite, down to earth, and had amazing recommendations for me and my girlfriend. Amazing restaurant and our favorite!
