I can't say enough good things about Philly Personal Training, and Elizabeth in particular! Like others who have posted here, I went to Philly Personal Training when I needed some help getting back on the health & fitness wagon. I'd just turned 30, had struggled through a recent illness, and was facing some chaos in my personal life. I decided to spend the money on personal training once a week to get myself back into a fitness routine, and thought that having a trainer would help push me further than I'd do myself. It did so much more. The habits I developed during my training sessions (From September-November) stuck with me, even after I discontinued my training due to moving out of the area, and now when I work out on my own, I can better understand when I can push myself and when my body needs to rest. My intimidation about weight or TRX machines at the gym is gone because I know how to use them. Even after a lapse in working out, I feel more optimistic about getting back into a routine, because I know that my body will build strength in time. A bit about the process: I did an intake interview with Brian, who asked me about my goals, and matched me up with Elizabeth. She is FABULOUS. Tough enough that my muscles felt like jelly after leaving most sessions, but 100% positive and encouraging. One thing in particular that impressed me is her education -- Elizabeth has a degree in exercise science, which meant that she was able to devise work-arounds for some old injuries / weak spots I have, and we RARELY repeated exercises -- she's great at coming up with creative and challenging activities. Further, she was great about being flexible with meeting times. I have a frequently-changing work schedule, and she was great about accommodating this with a few days' heads up. Philly Personal Training's Center City location was easy to get to, and their gym clean and well-lit. There's even a shower onsite if you need to dash off to work after an appointment. The one thing I didn't really utilize was the nutrition side of Philly Personal Training's program. I felt pretty good about my eating habits, so didn't engage much with their meal plans. However, others might find this feature useful. Overall, a great experience, and I'd highly recommend.
Sophia's deserves 5 stars but there are two reasons why it doesn't have it. First let me give you some background on my hair.....I am an African American female with jet black hair...very thick..and NO PERM! Please keep that in mind when reading this review. Sophia's is run by Danielle, it used to be run by her mother...Sophia...but she's recently retired. The shop is beautiful! For it to be in that area of West Philly...you wouldn't expect it to look like that which is great. If you want the whole beauty salon experience for a decent price...this is the place for you. The staff is very professional...the typical gossip salon image...NOT here. They do have a receiptionist who is very friendly and welcomes you when you walk in, and also offers you tea or coffee (if it's in the morning). My stylist at Sophia's is Danielle...who is wonderful. The only "problem" with Danielle is that EVERYONE loves her so expect to wait if you're not the 1st person at the shop when it opens. She can't help it though...she's just that good. There is another stylist there, Ebony...I've heard she's good as well but I personally have never gotten my hair done by her. I haven't come across ANYONE who can do my hair as well as Danielle does. Because my hair is so thick and she knows to use a straightening comb for my roots. YES PEOPLE...A STRAIGHTENING COMB. She also uses a Chi flat irons...which make me look like I have a perm I SWEAR! Danielle uses very good products as well on my hair which help it to grow. Now I'm second guessing posting this review because I don't want anyone to know about Sophia's!!! lol. Anyways, what prompted me to write this review was going to other salons (one I JUST came from in Harlem, Sho Nuff, review coming soon) and NOT being completely or nearly as satisfied as when Danielle does my hair. Like I said before...no one can do my hair like she can. The ONLY two reasons why Sophia's doesn't have 5 stars is because...1. Danielle charges $45 for a wash and curl...(not a big fan of the price, even though its worth it...I just wish I could get my hair done more often) and 2. The wait time even if you have an appointment. But besides that...the place is wonderful!
I'm not sure if I will be able to fit everything in this TINY review box. I googled so many places for over a month. I really wanted to get back in shape. After reading about Philly Personal Training, I kept looking at other places but nothing stood out as much as this place. I booked an appointment that same week. I met with Brian who helped me figure out my goals while staying within my budget. I started the following week. First, the staff here is very nice and helpful. If you have any questions or concerns, they will respond very quickly. I sent Brian an email, I got a response back within 30 minutes. I have never had a problem with them. They are very welcoming. The atmosphere is very pleasant to be in. I have never felt out-of-place. Second, I have been working with Elizabeth. Let me tell you, I look forward to seeing her every week. She pushes me to do my best, even the days I don't see her. I'll be so sore the next day but I love it. I can shoot her a text and she will respond right away. It took me awhile to get my eating habits in order and an exercise routine down; she has been there every step of the way. Oh yeah, her sense of humor is through the roof. She is always smiling, which makes my workouts even better. She makes you want to workout. Every time I try to fall off the wagon, I hear her voice in the back of my head. She knows what she is doing. She is very knowledgeable. Saying the she is the BEST personal trainer/person is an understatement. Third, the dietitian Theresa is outstanding. I have had a really good session with her. She designs a plan just for you. She gives you a list of foods that are healthy for you while including things you like and dislike. She is very easy to get in touch with if you have any questions. If you really want to get back in shape and feel good about yourself, THIS is the place. I promise you, you will NOT regret it!!
