I've just adopted my second German Shepherd from the Parkersburg Humane Society. The first one I adopted 6 years ago, passed away at 12 years of age. My new 6 year old "baby", is a beautiful, extraordinarily trained German Shepherd, who speaks German commands. His brother Zeus is still available. You will have to go through the adoption process like I've done two separate times. The Humane Society workers and volunteers truly love the animals in their care, and they're doing the best that they can with limited resources. The recently opened Spot Clinic, provides low cost spaying/neutering, a service which is needed very badly in Parkersburg.

It's just really sad that a 43 year old dog lover cannot adopt a dog from this shelter. I have no fence.....have never had a fence and have owned several dogs. The last one from this same shelter. I WALK my dogs outside on a leash and do not let them run in a fenced area. Has no one ever done this.....seems to have worked for me for years and have 20 acres to walk it on.

I could have adopted a child easier. Sad, I'd have given this dog a super life...I am home all day. Now I will never go back there.

I work for a local veterinarian. The Parvo virus is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal condition. It is spread when a dog comes in contact with the feces of an infected dog. The virus can remain infectious on contaminated ground for five months or more. As a result, you pet can contract parvo anywhere dogs come together, such as parks, kennels, shelters, and pet stores. So just because a pet is adopted from the humane society, it is a good idea to have them vet checked and vaccinated. Because of this, however unfortunate, a high number of pets from kennels can contract the parvovirus through no fault of the facility. Humane societies are trying to help, try not to be so accusatory. Thanks~
