Macular Degeneration

Cataracts
Cataracts tend to develop gradually in all people. Most people who have cataracts are 50 or older, and in fact, around 50 percent of all people develop a cataract by the time they reach the age of 65. Virtually everybody who is 75 or older develops cataracts. Although cataracts are extremely rare in children, it is possible for infants to have congenital cataracts.

Eye Exam
A general eye exam usually includes an assessment of visual acuity, a refraction to determine an appropriate glasses or contact lens prescription if necessary, eye muscle motility and visual field evaluation, measurement of the intraocular pressure, and an assessment of all parts of the eye including eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, iris, lens, vitreous and retina. A yearly general eye exam should include dilation–instillation of certain eye drops to enlarge the pupil and allow the doctor to examine the retina and the optic nerve.

Dr. Jayaram attended Stanford University where she graduated with both a Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences and a Bachelors of Arts in Communication. She received her medical degree in her hometown of Chicago at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. She completed an internal medicine intern year at University of Chicago’s NorthShore Health System and then a three-year ophthalmology residency at Northwestern University.

Dr. Kabak received his undergraduate education both in South Africa and in the United States, including Dartmouth College. He returned to Johannesburg where he obtained his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. Following internships in internal medicine and general surgery and fulfillment of his national service as a physician, he and his wife moved to Chicago, where he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Northwestern University Medical Center.

The front portion of the eye is covered with a thin, transparent membrane called the cornea, which protects the interior of the eye. If there is a break or defect in the surface layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, and damage to the underlying stroma, a corneal ulcer results. The ulcer is usually caused by microorganisms, which gain access to the stroma through the break in the epithelium.
