At least 20% of the bloodwork we do in senior aged pets reveal abnormalities. The key to a longer healthier quality of life for your aging pet is early detection and/or early intervention in therapy for these disease related conditions. Our doctors firmly believe in a good physical examination externally as well as internally for your pet.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
We strongly recommend monthly heartworm prevention. Heartworm prevention usually comes in the form of a tablet and is relatively inexpensive, compared to the overall effects on a pet’s health. It is Thornton Animal Hospital’s strong belief that it is much more economical to prevent heartworms than to treat for the disease and most importantly, it is much safer for your pet. Typically, heartworm preventatives also prevent many intestinal parasites and your more expensive heartworm preventatives will usually include some form of flea prevention. Heartworm preventatives can cost as little as a few dollars per month.
Pain Management
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Fleas cause skin irritation, and in some cases allergic reactions. Ingestion of a contaminated flea can also infect your pet with tapeworms, a worm with a flattened, ribbonlike appearance. The flea population can explode in a short amount of time if they are living in your environment. The flea life cycle is 21 days and is comprised of 4 life stages; egg, larvae (maggot), pupae (cocoon) and adult flea. A single adult flea can produce up to 50 new eggs each day, thus starting the entire flea life cycle over. In order to reduce the chance of infestations, we suggest monthly flea prevention according to your needs, where every pet in the household is treated.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
• Bordetella – vaccine recommended every six months after initial vaccine series depending on exposure in boarding kennels, dog parks, obedience school, veterinary hospitals or grooming facilities. Vaccine required every year for use of the kennel and boarding area of the hospital, as well as the grooming facility.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
• Distemper/Adenovirus/Parainfluenza/Parvovirus – vaccine recommended every year after initial vaccine series. Vaccine required every year for use of the kennel and boarding area of the hospital, as well as the grooming facility.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Also at your puppy or kitten’s initial visit to Thornton Animal Hospital, we will decide on the best schedule of vaccinations needed for your pet. Although vaccinations are typically started at six weeks, we will customize a health care program designed specifically for your pet. We will not begin a course of vaccines, however, before your pet is ready. Puppies and kittens, like human babies, are quite susceptible to viral infections and disease. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you get your new pet examined and vaccinated as soon as possible.

At Thornton Animal Hospital, we understand that animals age at a much quicker rate than humans because their projected life span is much shorter. A geriatric or “senior” pet (seven years of age or older), may be more prone to serious health problems such as liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, anemia, infection, Cushing’s disease, thyroid disease, pancreatic disease, protein loss, certain types of cancer and long-term effects on the body from certain medications.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Dental tartar and the accompanying infection are not only painful but can eventually lead to heart, lung and kidney disease. Should you note problems with bad breath, broken teeth, discolored teeth, tartar build-up, reddened gums, drooling, reluctance to eat hard foods, tooth loss, swallowing food whole or change in chewing habits, bring your cat or dog in to see us for a complete dental exam.

A native of Daleville, Alabama, completed his undergraduate studies at Auburn University in 2000 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences. Dr. Moore was accepted into Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. Dr. Moore loves all aspects of small-animal veterinary practice but especially enjoys small animal surgery, orthopedics and wound management. Dr. Moore was afforded the opportunity to practice veterinary medicine in Northwest Atlanta after graduation from vet school where he gained a lot of practical experience, proving to have useful skills in critical situations. Dr. Moore purchased Thornton Animal Hospital in 2008 and recently celebrated his 10th Anniversary of practice ownership.
