The Candy Store is the nickname given to this store which carries virtually everything related to the Amateur Radio hobby; radios (receivers, transceivers, scanners, etc...) cables, antennas, accessories of all kinds, test gear, books and magazines covering all aspects of ham radio... you name it, they've got it.
The staff are all licensed ham radio operators and are very friendly, knowledgable, and ready to help new hams get started with their hobby as quickly as possible. When I got my license, the first place I went was to the Oakland store (there is also a location in Sunnyvale) to get outfitted with a HT (Hand held Transceiver) radio and a repeater guide as well as a study guide for the next higher class of license. They gave me a nice 'new ham' discount and I went home happy and ready to get on the air right away.
It's nice to be able to actually spin the knobs on the many transceivers which are all set up and operating in the store. The hands-on aspect is so helpful to get to know the radios and be able to pick the one (or more!) that works best for your own needs. They have almost all of the many ICOM, Kenwood and Yaesu models on display and ready to test - licensed hams can operate on the store's callsign.
If you are looking for a scanner, or a radio for shortwave listening, and/or a decent antenna for either, they've got those too... and free coffee for the customers!
Be sure to check their website often for specials and deals which make things even sweeter!
