Sun Valley Lodge - Sun Valley, ID
When it comes to Idaho, the state has many charms that extend far beyond mere potatoes. For instance, Sun Valley Resort takes claim to being the country's first ski resort. And when people go, many of them stay at the 148-room Sun Valley Lodge (pictured above), a luxury hotel complete with Sun Valley's famous outdoor ice rink and six-lane bowling alley for kids and kids at heart. Not too shabby for a place built in 1936.
Mountain Stats: As the first destination ski resort in the country, Sun Valley ranks right up there with the best. Bald Mountain (loved by serious skiiers such as Picabo Street) has 13 lifts, 64 runs and seven high-speed quads. That and everything from "glades to bowls, bumps to groomers, tree skiing to easy rollers" -- to very short waits in the way of lift lines.
