Sea Otter Pup

Born: Spring 2012
Home: Pittsburgh Zoo - Pittsburgh, PA

All About Baby: Who could resist this face? The baby sea otter was the sole survivor among a group who perished from exposure after being stranded outside the town of Port Heiden. A few more hours and he wouldn't have made it. Residents nursed the baby with a bottle of Pedialyte until he was FedExed to his nursery at the Water's Edge exhibit.

Who Knew? Lucky pup! Sea otter pups rely on their mothers to care for their coats until they can do it themselves, and for enough food to replace 35% of their body weight. Without mum, this brave boy was at risk of hypoglycemia from not eating, and exposure due to a matted coat.
