Nov. 20, 2012: Nearing Thanksgiving, Xiao Liwu weighs 10.8 pounds and measures 25.5 inches. Several teeth have sprouted their sharp nubs. Though he's crawling well, he's not quite ready to tackle the outdoor terrain of the zoo's panda exhibit. So he's still in his nursery den tended to by mom, Bai Yun.
Jan. 9, 2013: Finally, after months of hiding behind the furry protection of mom Bai Yun, the country's newest panda cub emerged to greet the world. Padding out into his public exhibit at San Diego Zoo, the irresistible ball of cuddle put on quite a show for onlookers, doing flips over branches, chomping on vegetation, and generally mugging for the camera. According to zoo staff, the cub is quite curious and likes to play with balls.
At first, the 16-pound, nearly 6-month-old cub will only be available to the public between 9:30-11:30AM while he gets used to the attention. If you can't get to the zoo, you don't have to give up the cute: See Xiao Liwu, his brother Yun Zi and their mom any time on the zoo's 24-hour Panda Cam.
