Padlock Ranch Cowboy School

At some point in life (usually on a Monday) most of us daydream about ditching the rat race, moving to the country, and living off the land. Then you get real. But you can have it both ways at Padlock Ranch Cowboy School, in Ranchester, Wyo., where you'll get away from it all to play John Wayne. During the summer, you can learns skills like horsemanship, cattle work, stockmanship, and cowboy ethics. Woo doggy, you will work -- but who cares when you're on the back of a palomino watching the sun set in the vast sky.

You also can opt for one of Padlock's Working Ranch Vacations, which have activities that vary by season. Ride in May to round up mother cows and their calves, or in September to experience a full-on fall cattle drive. The ranch also is BYOH (bring your own horse), if you own one, but the horse-less will be matched up with an agreeable steed.
