Custom Fit: Prefab doesn't have to mean homogenous. Consider Hybrid House from Sander Architects: part prefab, all custom. The great room pictured (above left) was designed for a sculptor, while the room on the right was customized to accommodate a symphony and wall art for the President-Emeritus of the Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles.
How They Do It: Architects come up with a unique design for individual clients, then the priciest components are pre-made to cut costs.
Cost: Residence for a Briard (above right) cost $500,000 for 3,800 square feet. That's about $130 per square foot. Pictured left: Residence for a sculptor, exterior.
Timeline:The shell of the house took only three weeks to assemble.
