Meet the Holiday Home-Glower

The Medhurts' display has been so supremely spirited for years, we had to include it again -- even though they won't be putting up the lights for the 2013 season. From our 2012 interview:

If there were ever a man who deserves a drum roll of thousands before flipping the switch, it's Mike Medhurst. His phenomenally luminous display is a labor of love, and has earned his family fame across Colorado and beyond as "The Greeley Griswalds." Thousands of cheer-seekers come to see the spectacle every year. And if you happen to stop by, you'll also crack a smile for Mike's neighbor, Kurt Smith, who humorously gives props to his friend by simply displaying lights saying "Why Try?" on his own home.

Our interview with Mike Medhurst:

First, the two questions everyone asks: Approximately how many lights are in your display? And how long does it take you to put them up?

Mike: I will have over 135,000 lights up this year. It takes me a little over three solid, non-stop weeks to get the the display up. I work 12-16 hour days to get it put up in time.

How many years having you been putting up your display? How did it become a tradition?

Mike: I have been putting up the display for over 10 years, and it has just gotten a little bigger each year. Not sure how it became a tradition.

What's your favorite part of your display or what are you most proud of?

Mike: My favorite part of my display is the Santa's workshop. It has a special meaning to me, because most of the animated figurines in the display are from my childhood.

Do you support any particular charity with your display?

Mike: We support the local Firefighter's for Santa toy drive. The Firefighter's for Santa is a program that helps out families that are less fortunate this Christmas. We accept unwrapped new toys, store gift cards, and cash donations.

And just for fun... What's your favorite holiday movie and song? And is there any one celebrity you'd like to meet?

Mike: My favorite holiday movie is "A Christmas Story", and favorite song is "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The celebrity I would like to meet is Jennifer Aniston.
