Super Mario Bros. 2 for Nintendo 3DS

Why He Wants It: When it comes to my son's true passions, there's mommy, daddy and then Super Mario, his favorite Italian plumber. So when Super Mario Bros. 2 hit shelves, he took note. The game is a side-scrolling adventure game that records all the coins players collect throughout the game. Nintendo recently announced that over 300 billion gold coins have been collected by players of this game globally since launching. My son will likely put a bigger dent in that, a good thing since he'll likely need the money for college. A close second was the Wii U console (lower picture) -- the first new home video game system in six years -- which just launched to help 'Mario' lovers collect another 300 billion coins.

Perfect For: It's rated E for Everyone, which means that my son will be playing alongside my coin-loving wife. But don't forget to use parental controls to restrict 3D mode for children 6 and under.
Price: $39.99; Wii U $299.99
