Dr. Ramkumar Ramamirtham (Dr. Ram) has worked in the industry as a research scientist and was engaged in intra ocular lenses and myopia prevention. Glaucoma
Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, is a complex disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is comprised of a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in the eyes. The disease can occur at any age but is more common in older adults. Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs, and its effect is so gradual that people with glaucoma may not notice a change in vision and may not receive glaucoma treatment until the condition is at an advanced stage.

He has over 15 peer reviewed scientific publications and has served as reviewer for eye care journals including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Vision Research, Optometry and Vision Science. In addition, he is engaged in vision research at NECO and Boston Children’s Hospital. He was also a student member of American Optometric Association and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the layer of the eye that sends the images we see to the brain. The condition, also known as age-related macular degeneration, may result in blurred or no vision in the center of the visual field. In its early stages, there are often no symptoms, but over time some people experience a gradual worsening of vision that may affect one or both eyes. While it does not result in complete blindness, loss of central vision can make it hard to recognize faces, drive, read, or perform other activities of daily life. In some cases, macular degeneration can also cause visual hallucinations.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK and PRK are the two most common laser correction procedures. They correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea to refocus light directly onto the retina.
Cataracts
Astigmatism is a common vision condition that causes blurred vision that occurs when the cornea is irregularly shaped or sometimes because of the curvature of the lens inside the eye. The condition is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens that prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, the light-sensitive surface at the back of the eye. The surface of the cornea is shaped more like a football instead of round like a basketball and the eye is unable to focus light rays to a single point. In this case, vision becomes out of focus at any distance. In addition, the curvature of the lens inside the eye can change, resulting in an increase or decrease in astigmatism. This change frequently occurs in adulthood and can precede the development of naturally occurring cataracts.

At this exam, one of our optometrists will check to ensure the child is seeing properly and look for conditions that could impair eye health or vision, such as strabismus (misalignment or crossing of the eyes), farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism.
