A Wonderful Dining Destination

The Painted Lady Restaurant in Newberg OR now has a nightly tasting menu... four courses for $60, you have a couple choices for each course. (It's their only option, there is no ""regular"" menu.) They use seasonal, local ingredients, so the menu is always changing. I was there in December and I'm still dreaming of the gnocchi --- pillowy, soft and firm, topped with a wild mushroom ragout that was heavenly. Rich, deep flavor, perfectly seasoned - I will compare all gnocchi to this gnocchi from now on.

The steelhead over cauliflower puree with roasted beets was popular with everyone at the table... the fish was everything it should be: moist, tender, flavorful, fresh. If I hadn't known the puree was cauliflower, I would have honestly thought it was a soft, gentle mashed potato puree. They were buttery, creamy, earthy and truly out of this world.

Beyond the food -- and go for the cheese plate! at an extra $15 it is worth it! -- the service and cocktails were fantastic. I know it is a wine destination, and in wine country, but I'd had too much wine that day, and was perfectly happy with a classic, dry martini to start and a Manhattan just-as-it-should-be later on. Seems like a full bar can be hard to come by, but this place is top-notch, a real competitor among the best restaurants I've eaten at in San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver BC and Portland. The service was memorable for its professionalism and comfort. I walked in and felt right at home. Well, a fancy home, but I walked right in and felt wholly welcome.

For guests - I went with out of town family - and for a special celebration, The Painted Lady is on the top of my list for a long time to come!

Wow! Wow! Wow!

My wife and I dined at The Painted Lady on 8/15/08. We were celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary. Everything about our experience was PERFECT! We arrived early and were promptly seated at a private table for two near the rear of the dining room, which was beautiful. We ordered the grand tasting menu, rather than the 3 course meal. For the next 2.5 hours we were treated to an exquisite 6-course (we added a cheese plate) meal. Each course was perfectly timed and extremely tasty. Highlights: Parmesan flan, buffalo Carpaccio with spicy arugula salad, seared sea scallop w/ carmelized leeks, pate w/ blackberries, filet with red wine sauce, Oregon blue cheese, seared spinach and pureed carrots, chocolate souffle w/ raspberry cream (this was heavenly!!!). The service was perfect. Our water and wine glasses were never empty, and the waiter checked back frequently without bothering us.

My wife and I have been to many of the fine restaurants in Oregon wine country and The Painted Lady is BY FAR THE BEST!!!

Total Package Restaurant

I have dined in wonderful restaurants from Africa to Oregon and The Painted Lady is what I call ""A Total Package"". The charming little house with the white pickett fence is inviting and adorable. We were greeted by Jessica and shown to our table. All the tables are good but my 2 favorites are the one by the front window and the one by the side window. Clever little grape vine plants on the tables are so appropriate for the wine country atmosphere. I love the different meal course selections. I almost always choose a soup for the first course-even in the summer-because Chef Allen makes thee most delicious soups! Second course is usually a fresh fish that is truly fresh! And the desserts! A perfect ending to a total package meal. Good luck deciding which dessert to choose. My self, I always go with the chocolate choice but the fresh fruit treats are really yummy in the summer. What a great restaurant, with great service! I love it!

Best Restaurant in Wine Country

The Painted Lady is, by far, the best restaurant in Oregon wine country and competes with Portland's best. A variety of local fare changes every night and is paired, on the chef's menu, with favorite local wines. The service is spot on... a well-oiled machine run by the ""front of the house"" owner. I have been many, many times and have never been disappointed with food, service, accomodations, or the very reasonable price. Don't miss this Willamette Valley gem.

A Wonderful Find!

The Painted Lady is the restaurant that my husband and I choose to visit for every special occasion. We even find ourselves looking for reasons to celebrate just so we have an excuse to go back more often. The service is impeccable and the food is exquisite. The Painted Lady is the one place we can recommend to anyone and trust that they will be as delighted as we are every time we spend an evening there.

The Painted Lady: a very special evening

My wife and I visited the Painted Lady for the first time for our wedding anniversary the day before New Year's. We had the full fixed menu with the wine suggestions. We could not have been more pleased. The courses were promptly served with enough time in between to really savour the food. The wine was perfectly matched and not too much and not too little. The server was very experienced and was happy to share his view on the wine being served and had interesting experiences to share about the vineyards. The courses were heated properly and obviously served immediately. The entire evening was gracious and memorable. We can't wait to get back up to Portland and visit Newburg. This restaurant compares most favorably with the best two restaurants we have here in Ashland.

Best fine dining restaurant on the West Coast

I have had the pleasure of dining at The Painted Lady many times and I am always impressed with the entire dining experience. The service and the atmosphere is outstanding, but the food is beyond belief. I have had the opportunity to dine at many very nice restaurants in the States and abroad and I can honestly say The Painted Lady is at the top of all of the restaurants. Don't miss the oppertunity to have dinner here!!

A Food Romance

If you are looking for a great restaurant in the Willamette Valley you have to look no further than The Painted Lady in Newberg. With boutique hotels and resorts finding their way to the wine country in the near future the restuarant scene has already arrived. The Painted Lady is located in Newbergs historic downtown which is just minuets away from some of Oregon's most well known wineries.
On my first forray into the Wine Country I was told by several different tasting rooms that I needed to go to The Painted Lady and so I did.

I was greeted with a warm hello and promptly sat in their beautifully restored dining room. After looking at the menu for a minuet I knew it was going to be a hard choice, but I decided to really go for it and chose to go with the Grand Tasting menu. The food was amazing. Starting with an amuse just to get my palate ready. The next course was a venison carpacio with an arugula salad. Followed by a dish of Diver Scallops in a Chestnut Sauce with White Truffles. A true suprise was how good the next course of Basil fed Escargot and Potato Gnocchi was. The Gnocchi was amazing and I consider myself to be somewhat of a gnocchi conaseur. The main course was Roasted Quail stuffed with mushrooms over a bed of melted leeks. Finally I had a chocolate torte with a chocolate and marshmellow terrine.

The pairings with the wines were excellent and being from the Bay Area I would have expected to pay much more for this experience. The service is both friendly and knowledgeable along with being extremely attentive. I would recommend anyone to the Painted Lady and have been back myself many times.

In fact anytime the Chef has Foie Gras on the menu you should not miss it. One time he prepared it two ways; one way a pate and the other served warm inside a muffin, absolutely genius. I have found very few restaurants that compare to the Painted Lady.

Why hasn't this place gotten a James Beard Award yet??

Back in Oregon wine country again this fall...but the best part of the trip is dining at The Painted Lady. Every time I return, the consistency and attention to minute details is evident. Chef Allen perfects his seasonally amazing concoctions and dazzles you with flavors and technique, not trendy juxtapositions. The Painted Lady should easily make the list of Top 5 Restaurants on the West Coast.
The herb-crusted Albacore tuna on Mediterranean salad was cooked medium-rare and seasoned perfectly. The divers scallops were seared, succulent, and sitting atop a puree of butternut squash to highlight the nip of fall in the Oregon evening. Jessica's chocolate tart was excellent...only suggestion would be to lose the toasted marshmallow on top...ganache didn't need it...maybe a few toasted hazelnuts for an accent.
Wine list has all the great Oregon Pinots and at maybe $20 over the actual price of the bottle!! Try finding that in a Napa restaurant!

Year after year, Allen and Jessica present a level of culinary achievement you'd be hard pressed to find in the most expensive Michelin-rated restaurant in any city in the world...all right in Newberg. Why haven't the James Beard folks noticed this little gem? Because it is so dazzling they can't stand to look in this direction...
