I have a broken fibula and most unfortunately have terrible insurance (better than none, I guess). Dr. Turtel was the only orthopedic specialist in my area who was able to take me within 4 days for my ER follow-up, although I live quite far away, in another part of Brooklyn. After reviewing only my x-rays and written report from my ER visit 4 days prior (and taking new x-rays in his office), I was told that I would need surgery. ""How is that possible?"" I asked. ""You have no idea of the status of the ligaments. Are you going to do an MRI?"" ""Not necessary. You have to come back and see my colleague Dr. Shur early next week, then he'll schedule surgery for the end of the week."" My response: ""No way do I need surgery for a simple fracture, I'm going for a second opinion."" Sure enough, after an appointment the following day with another orthopedic specialist (affiliated with the Hospital for Joint Diseases and Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan), I learned that not only do NOT need surgery (which could NEVER have been determined without taking off the hard cast I got at the ER and doing a stress test and/or an MRI?which Dr. Turtel did NOT do), I am already in a removable ""air"" cast just a week after my fracture, on my way to recovery (thanks to the all important second opinion). My experience leads me to believe that the 5-star reviews here must be fake, and I agree 100% with other reviewers: these people are only interested in operating on you so they can make money (unfortunately all too common in this day and age). Find someone else!!! ALWAYS get a second opinion!!
