I can't believe Batali is comparing bankers to Hitler and Stalin. Agree with the previous post that it is completely insensitive. Why can't he just stick to making food? I can only assume that if he is busy attending conferences and media events offering his political views he is definitely not paying attention to his businesses and the quality of his food. Given this, and the insensitivity he recently displayed in comparing bankers to Hitler, I will no longer eat at his restaurants and will encourage others to do the same.

Mario Batali's recent comment comparing bankers to Hitler and Stalin are downright disgusting and irresponsible (reference at bottom of review). While there are many views on bankers during these challenging times, his references to such dictators who executed many people for their religion and / or beliefs is hurtful and ignorant. The Pig is well know for its piggish staff. Just count how many times they shove you out their way. Once when I complained to the hostess this was no way to treat regulars she said, ""Well you keep coming back don't you?"" Classic. Which restaurant management school did you go to? Um, none. My buddies have black-listed this joint. Try Highland instead for a friendly welcome at the door. And if you DO go to the Pig, take your own ketchup as the cook will refuse to serve you any. (Reviews as of 6/6/11 24 negative vs 21 positive. Hellooo?!!)

Incredible deco and food!

My best friend and I went to the spotted pig for lunch on the 13th December. It was recommend by one of my coworker who is from New York. I had also read negative reviews on the staff and was ready for it but nothing happened. The staff form the front desk to the waiters were absolutely fantastic. Maybe it is because we are french and used to the incredible rudness of the french waiters but we were served so nicely.\r The food, is absolutely gorgeous, the deco is fun and the waiters represent well the restaurant with they strange looks. \r I also forgot to mention the beautiful cocktails we had for lunch that made me happy all afternoon... lol\r \r Overall, one of the best restaurant I have ever experienced in my life

I don't understand all the negativity about the service. Maybe it's because I sat at the upstairs bar for lunch each of the two times I went, but the people serving me were very friendly and accomodating. I understand this place gets extremely busy during peak hours so the staff certainly have their hands full here most of the time. I sometimes wonder how biased reviews can be based on some people's unreasonable standards for what is considered good service.\r Anyway, the food is very interesting, and for the most part tasty. If you are looking for run-of-the-mill generic fare this is not the place for you. The appetizers feature deviled eggs and chopped chicken liver, both made in a unique way that was very satisfying. The lunch entrees include a haddock chowder which was good but not my favorite, a duck egg salad that was outstanding, as well as an excellent burger with roqfourt cheese.\r They also feature an excellent selection of beers on tap as well as a delicious dessert menu. The banana toffee pie (or something like that - I forget the exact name) was outstanding, as is their flourless chocolate cake. All in all, this is a great restaurant to enjoy a tasty and unique meal. I would like to try it for dinner sometime although I understand one has to arrive very early to avoid a long wait.

The famous Spotted Pig was the scene for my most recent burger gorge, the otherwise known Gastropub with famed pork servant April Bloomfield at the helm was a long-awaited treasure. I finally worked up the courage and patience to face the long sometimes 2 hour waits that were promised, only to be pleasantly surprised and whisked upstairs by a more than capable “piglet” for a spot at the bar. I look around at the room and was in bewilderment by the amount of people devouring the juicy signature burger ! “could it be that good”? “could it be that popular” ? the answer to that will be revealed , for now I was taking in the sights of the trend setting fashionista’s and urban pop foodies dining and chatting in a decor that resembles someones Grandmothers house rather than a critically acclaimed eatery. With old-fashioned trinkets, pig ornaments and flea market type memorabilia, it made for a visually entertaining rest while I waited for my famous beef party on a bun. The Michelin star winning “Pig”, as Ms. Bloomfield calls it, came about in 2004 after partnering with other culinary giants Ken Friedman and Mario Batali, whom she is also in cohorts together with many other restaurants, such as John Dory and newly famed Breslin.\r \r The much written about burger that I was about to sample was everywhere on diners plates, seemingly calling me from every angle of the room with its perfectly grilled bun creamy Roquefort and tangles of rosemary strip fries. I grew impatient as I smelt the aroma’s of rosemary and beautifully pungent cheese waft through the air as yet another burger was served to a nearby customer. ” When was it my turn” ? I thought to myself. After some witty jovial conversation with the bartender, my wait was over….this glorious beast of a burger was placed down on the bar in front of me, its pure beauty captivated me for a second as I decided which way I was going to bite into it, with condiment or without ? I opted for it as is, and my taste buds were swamped with an overwhelmingly satisfying flavor combination of superior beef quality and excellence in creamy Roquefort. My knowledgeable cheese source (MB) informed me that the much sought after Roquefort cheese featured on the Spotted Pig burger was in very near danger of being ousted by the triple increased tariff placed on luxury goods. Thankfully the Gods saved us all from such a travesty and future happy burger eaters can continue to savor this delightful creation as nature and Ms. Bloomfield intended.\r \r I enjoyed every last morsel of my burger as I occasionally paused not wanting it to end, the strands of rosemary fried potatoes were insanely good and crispy. I found myself shovelling these fries into my mouth as onlookers watched in amazement. I could have eaten everyone else’s plate in the place ! I was like some hunger crazed animal let loose in a cage of harmless and defenseless prey, gorging till there was no tomorrow. But sadly after a few minutes, my Spotted Pig experience was but a memory. In case you haven’t realized by this story, this portion of my quest at the Spotted Pig was pretty much perfect ! The staff were pleasant and professional, the atmosphere was fun and lively and most of all the burger was in a word “AMAZING” . At $17 it’s on the high-priced side for a burger, but personally I thought it was worth every penny. Definitely visit the “Pig” on off times if you want a shot at a table, although if you’re getting a burger you’ll be just fine nestled at the bar with a birdseye view of all the culinary wonder, which is the Spotted Pig.\r

When did it become chic to treat your guests like crap?

Since they don't take reservations, having dinner here means waiting for an exceptionally long time. Your reward at the end of it? A host that treats you like you're gum on his shoe and a waitstaff that exhibit the same attitude. What's worse? The food is just mediocre. It's oversalted and not particularly inventive. This place is certainly not worth the wait, the price, the crammed seating, or the hype... and it's definitely not worth the abuse. Whoever is doing the hiring at the Spotted Pig should be embarrassed. And someone should remind that snotty tall host with the dirty looking hair at the door that he is a HOST -- meaning that he is supposed to welcome people, not make them feel like a necessary nuisance.

yeah, i'm sorry that your acting/modelling career hasn't taken off, and that you're reduced to waiting tables,but c'mon, is the bad service and the attitude really necessary?\r when i'm ordering a burger at the bar, wouldn't you think ketchup and mustard would automatically be brought when the food was delivered, and that i wouldn't have to ask for it, and then wait 10 minutes for only the mustard to come? \r although i wouldn't expect any of the ""beautiful"" wait staff to be all that bright, i would at the very least expect a little common sense. but i guess when you're more worried about how that new tattoo is healing more than whether or not your customer is getting the food they ordered it doesn't really matter, right?\r the food is actually good here, and the vibe is fun, but the simple fact that the manager of this joint no doubtedly has received a slew of complaints about the service, and doesn't rectify it, shows he/she is as braindead as the serving staff.

Went there for Brunch this weekend, however, was all around top notch. We got there early (12:30ish) so the wait wasn't too long. The service was fantastic (and I don't say that lightly - I was a server for years and have high standards). I had the burger, which totally deserves its reputation, along with a mountain delicious rosemary fries. My friends had the french toast (which I didn't try) and the Cuban sandwich (which I did - awesome). I The decor here is great, and makes for a warm and cozy environment. The only drawback is how cramped it can get, especially when crowded, but after living in the East Village for four years, if there is one thing I am used to - it's small, crowded bars/restaurants.

Nice bar upstairs but that's pretty much it. Some preppy girls like to haul all the way from the UES to check this place and it's funny to watch. Some are pretty beautiful so it makes the bar pretty pleasant. I never had dinner here because I don't bend over to over rated places where you need to wait hours - or - submit yourself to a nose browning session to the staff to get upgraded on the list. Still, I recommend you try it because I've heard the food is good and I did try few appetizers once (they were amazing). Bar downstairs is packed with bobo (bourgeois boheme) and euro-trash people, avoid it.

Went out to dinner here with a few friends and objectively, each item of food was seriously overly salted. From the squid stew to the shoe string fries, to the skirt steak and the burnt vegetables. It's was almost like they were trying to get people to order more drinks. I don't generally write reviews, but this was too much.

got there at 530pm on wednesday sat at the bar (6ft long) and waited about 25mns before anyone asked me if i wanted a drink! Then they asked me if i wanted a table for dinner... needless to say that I chose another place for dinner, The atmosphere seemed nice and staff too cool, but what happened to just good service?

We just dined at Spotted Pig this evening and started out with a very tasty dish of gnudi. The burger, short ribs and brussel sprouts to follow were so salty that we barely made a dent in these dishes- really disappointing. We had very high hopes for a delicious gastro-pub dinner and were left thirsty and speechless. Perhaps there was an accident with the salt in the kitchen...

went here this past friday night and had a great time. wish i remembered my server's name because he was dynamite! we had a few drinks at the bar while waiting for our table and then sat upstairs, he place reminds me slightly of a place we have in philly called The Standard Tap, only even better. the octopus and celery salad was excellent, along with the oysters. my husband's burger was perfect. very low key and unpretentious with a hipster vibe (the host was an uber hipster) but i would definitely go back.
