Best Experience in NYC

I went to Staghorn Steakhouse earlier this week at 4pm while visiting NYC on business. Technically they were closed and didn't start serving dinner until 5pm but the manager took pity on me and let me be seated and opened the kitchen. He even proceeded to wait on me himself and made exceptions to the menu for me. All totaled I had at least four people waiting on me hand and foot. It was the best experience I've had ... view more

Three of us went in after around 8:30 for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was empty. That should have been the first clue. We ordered drinks and looked at the menu. Too pricey. We told the waiter we would just be enjoying our drinks. I guess the mgmt didn't like that we weren't spending money as he paced up and down in front of us, glaring, mumbling under his breath, and at one point, I thought he was going to ... view more

Waist of time and money!!! Awful service & food!!!

Worst service I have ever experienced. Rude and does not care less. Menu is very poor and basic.\n\nDo not go there, even if it is the only place open in the area (which is never the case)...IT IS BAD

Avoid this place

I headed to the Staghorn based on the 4.5 star rating. it must have changed hands recently. The new owners have made it as dead as doornail. I was the ONLY person in the restaurant on a Thursday night at 8 pm. Drinks were $12 each!!! I drank my drink and left before ordering any food -- the owners appear to not understand the NYC market at all. I would avoid this place at all costs.\n

No Reason To Eat Here

Went to Staghorn last night for dinner before the Big East tournament. Other than it's proximity to MSG, there really are no redeaming qualities to this place. The proprietors and waitstaff are Eastern European (I think Romanian) trying to operate an American steakhouse. It's not working... First, our waiter definitely had some english problems - had significant difficulty communicating with us - we had no confid... view more

Staghorns is my favorite place near MSG

This place is spectacular, they are Romanian, they know fine service. Best porterhouse steak anywhere (sorry Ben Benson) and a reasonable number $$$. Within easy walking distance of the Garden (unless it is raining), and never too crowded to take in a special meal. I always make reservations, but I think you could chance just showing up.\r\n\r\n

Over-bearing service and unexceptional steak

We travelled to New York City from England to stay for a week at New Year. When we asked our hotel concierge if they could recommend a lively American steakhouse for the Saturday night, this is where he sent us. When we arrived, we could not see through the window that the restaurant only had one other couple eating, otherwise we may not have gone in. We went in and the lady who greeted us was friendly and profes... view more

Perfect for Special Occasions

Last week I was hosted by a business associate and we were seated within just a few minutes of our 8 PM reservation time. My host had calamari and lamb chops , and I had onion soup and salmon. I don't think these items could have been better anywhere--spectacular presentation, freshness, and flavors. The restaurant was very busy--even on a Wednesday night.\r\n\r\nOur waiter was professional and efficient--superb and ... view more

Modern Peter Luger's in Midtown

If Peter Luger's is the standard on what all steak houses are compared against, then this place is a close second. French onion soup had excellent flavor and texture with the broth containing thinly sliced onions. The fried calamari was freshly cooked. We decided on the Porter House for 2 so we can compare to Peter Luger's and it was excellent. Even the steak sauce had excellent flavor with a nice crips bite of horsh... view more

Give this one a pass

Based on the good reviews my fiance and I checked this place out last Friday. After our dining experience I seriously question the legitimacy of the prior reviews.\r\n\r\nWhile friendly, the service was incompetent. I know nothing about lighting, but the florescent lighting at the bar was horrible and the light they kept flipping on the ""wine cellar"" under the stairs was very distracting. It appeared that one of... view more
