Throughout his training in anesthesiology and pain medicine, he rotated through the various NYU campuses learning from experts in various fields including anesthesiology, maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and radiology to create a multi-modal, comprehensive pain management plan to address each patient individually to achieve optimal clinical outcomes. With this approach – which is often multidisciplinary — he establishes a diagnosis and uses various techniques such as physical therapy, medication management, lifestyle changes, and, if required, minimally invasive interventional techniques to address pain.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (skin nerve located on the side of your thigh) is a branch of the lumbar (low back) spinal nerves that travel under the inguinal ligament (groin area) and provides sensation to the side of the thigh. Because the nerve travels under the inguinal ligament, it is susceptible to impingement at the inguinal ligament. This is similar to carpal tunnel wherein the wrist’s median nerve becomes trapped.

After medical school he completed his internship in surgery and his residency in anesthesiology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, in New York City. He mastered ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks for orthopedic surgeries on shoulders, hips, knees and the upper extremity. Dr. Alexis completed his medical training with an Invasive Pain Management Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital, where he served as the Chief Administrative Fellow.

If the pain is radiating into the leg, it is more likely to be related to nerve impingement, which can happen for several reasons. The two most common causes would be a nerve impingement are secondary to a herniated disc or bony overgrowth on the nerve, and the second would be spinal stenosis. When it comes to chronic, non-radiating low back pain, determining the cause of pain starts with the patient history, physical exam findings, if any, and imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI’s.

More extensive testing, including nerve conduction studies, nerve biopsy, or imaging tests (eg, X-ray or computed tomography [CT] scan), is not usually needed to diagnose peripheral neuropathy.

Cancer pain treatment encompasses all pain that is associated from cancer and its treatment such as pain from any tumor, radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy related pain. Pain is one of the most common symptoms in cancer patients. Our goal is to alleviate this aspect of the disease so patients can spend more quality time outside of the doctor’s office going about their daily activities and lives.

Determined to improve his ability to help others, he pursued a Doctor of Medicine degree from Ross University School of Medicine before entering postgraduate training at The Mount Sinai Hospital in the heart of New York City. After completing his internship in General Surgery, he spent two years in a research laboratory at Bronx Veteran Affairs Medical Center (a Mount Sinai affiliate) studying the potential application of robotic and neuromodulatory technology in pain reduction, functional mobility improvement, and neuronal recovery among individuals living with spinal cord injuries. During the final year of his PM&R residency, he was elected as one of the Chief Residents by his peers and faculty.

Dr. Akuamoah has expertise in the treatment of painful conditions of the back and neck, including sciatica, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and continued pain after spine surgery. She also specializes in treating chronic joint pain, headaches, and neuropathic pain.
Whiplash
Degenerative disorders of the cervical spine develop over time, over-use, and abnormal wear and tear, such as repeated heavy lifting, or continued bad positioning. Such abnormal wear and tear over time may cause micro-traumas that can weaken soft tissues in the neck. Traumas such as falls, or acceleration deceleration movements such as whiplash are sudden in onset and may present immediately or days to weeks later.
Pinched Nerve
Why is it common for a pinched nerve in the neck to be more painful and possibly more severe than an impinged low back nerve? Because the cervical spine is a very mobile, is made up of structures that are smaller, and has less supportive musculature. Within the cervical canal is the spinal cord itself with a small layer of cerebrospinal fluid, surrounded by Dura matter. There is little wiggle room as we may have in the lumbar spine as the spinal cord ends at L1-2 and the canal is filled with fluid and the spinal nerve roots.
Neurosurgery
Hip Replacement
The procedure is performed using fluoroscopy (real time x-ray) that enables the pain management specialist to visualize the hip joint. A thin needle is guided to the joint and a small amount of contrast dye is injected to see inside the joint space followed by a local anesthetic. If the local anesthetic relieves hip pain, then the hip socket is the likely pain source. An injection of a steroid medication may provide prolonged pain relief. Intra-articular hip joint injections are a low risk, quick and effective treatment to relieve pain. The duration of pain relief depends on many things including the degree of underlying structural damage (i.e. osteoarthritis) and its susceptibility to the effects of the injection. An intra-articular hip joint injection may be performed to delay hip replacement surgery, as an alternative to surgical repair of labral – hip cartilage tears, and treat sprains or strains caused by sports or trauma. Sometimes the cause of hip pain is unknown and is termed idiopathic. It is a low risk and fast method of obtaining pain relief. The duration of relief depends on the degree of underlying damage, but typically cannot be estimated as patients respond differently to treatments.

The supraorbital (SON) and infraorbital nerves (ION) are branches of the trigeminal nerve; the main nerve that provides sensation to facial skin. The SON provides superficial sensation from the forehead into the scalp line. The ION supplies sensory innervations to the mid face; from the cheek to the nose. Supraorbital or infraorbital neuralgia (nerve pain) may be caused by trauma, plastic surgery, shingles or other viral infection leads to nerve irritation. Symptoms include sharp, shooting, and tingling pain.

2. The radiofrequency probe is then inserted through the curved path to the common location of the nerve. Radiofrequency energy is used to generate heat which lesions the basivertebral nerve. After which, the probes are removed, and a bandage placed.

She graduated from The University of Rochester with a Bachelor of Science in molecular genetics prior to earning her Medical Degree and Master of Public Health at Tulane University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in anesthesiology at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City followed by a fellowship in interventional pain management at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Akuamoah uses an evidence-based multimodal approach often recommending behavioral therapy, physical therapy, medications, and cutting edge minimally invasive procedures, when necessary. She takes the time to carefully listen to her patients, so that she can help them reach their goals. She is committed to improving her patients’ quality of life, helping them return to work and other activities that they enjoy. She has a particular interest in helping historically undertreated groups including women and people of color.
