Cheated?

loverofNYCfood: Cheated! San Pietro not only has over priced food but they are very selective on their clientele and who they let in.

perfect example of an underhanded restaurant

san pietro is in midtown so i expected high prices but when the bill came out to $200 for 2 people and we didn't even get a bottle of wine or dessert, i simply felt cheated... for a fine dining restaurant to act so tacky and underhanded is unheard of...\r
first of all, the entire waitstaff rushes you, initially when they seat you they already expect you to have a drink order and when they give you a menu, they want to take your order in the next 2 minutes... its a grand total of 4 min
...view moreutes in between the time you sit down and the time it takes for them to pressure you to order... \r
the waiter forces specials on you, adn then re-recommends the specials when you order an item from the menu... stick to the menu, that way even if the food is overpriced at least you know what you're paying for...\r
the food is good, but no where near justifiable as compared to the price... i've eaten at many good italian restaurants in the city: Babbo, Bar Pitti, De Andrea, etc and all of them are just as good and cost no where near as much\r
the bill might as well be in another language: a bunch of illegible scribbles w/ the total amount circled and underlined.. \r
my gf and I had the calamari salad appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine and 1 latte and the bill was $170\r
32 for 2 glasses of decent pinot grigio?\r
9 for a latte? \r
It's not so much the total cost as it was the way they did it... underhanded, sneaky, quickly... take your business elsewhere and you'll have a much more pleasant dining experience... don't fall into the same trap i did

An ideal Southern Italian dining experience!

I dined at San Pietro on 1/31/07 and had a wonderful experience. From the moment we entered, we were treated as royalty. Service was impeccable and each dish was perfectly described. The food is excellent - perfect seasoning and wonderful touches such as white truffles sliced over fettucine tableside. The venison chop was superb and portions were a perfect amount for each person at the table - 3 men and a woman. The menu is a bit hard to read (as it is on their website), but the v...view moreariety leaves the diner wondering how to narrow their choices to just a few things. Wines were perfect as recommended and it was a pleasure to enjoy the wine in perfectly sized glassware. I would highly recommend this restaurant.view less

Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere.

I read an article about San Pietro in the NY Times and thought I would give the place a try. I made a reservation and the person on the other end was so rude it almost made me want to not go there, but I just ignored it. When my friend and I walked in, we were greeted by what seemed a manager yelling at an employee. We were promptly seated and given menus, which we didn't really get to look at, because our server proceeded to tell us about the specials and recommendations. My frien...view mored asked if he could give us a few more minutes to look at the menu, and he said that he highly recommended some dishes from the specials he had just recited. We said okay, and he took our menus. Turns out the specials weren't that ""special"" after all -- tasteless pasta, soggy meat, bland tiramisu-- and we were definitely overcharged. This is an abuse I will never again tolerate.\r
\r
I would NOT recommend this place to my worst enemy. If you do eat here, order items from the print menu and don't let waiters decide what to serve.

Watch out or you will be overcharged

Nice enough place to walk into BUT do not order anything that is not on the menu or you will be charged exorbitant prices. We were charged $48 each for a sardine salad and a tuna carpatio salad from the waiter 'specials'! Also, they have the bad habit of opening bottles of water without asking. Very discourteous and will certainly make me pass them by the next time. There are plenty of other places in New York that care about repeat business not to treat their customers with such disre...view morespect.view less

not so classy afterall

This is one restaurant I can promise we'll never return to. For a ""so-called"" fine restaurant, they played a very under-handed game of swindling your money. We often go to very fine and pricey restaurants and never questioned the prices or ethics. Since this place was recommended with high regards by someone who frequents the establishment, we allowed the servers to make their recommendations. They promptly gave us a menu but within a minute or so, they were scooped off the ta...view moreble and we were all (6 of us) having whatever our server decided. This all happened so quickly that half of us didn't even know our order was placed for us. Six people getting the same exact meal. The antipasto (no one really told us what it was) was OK but not what most of us would have chosen. It was a breaded dish. One person did not like eggplant so didn't eat most of the dish and I didn't care to eat the meatballs. The next item was delicious and enjoyed by all. It was a linguini with white truffles shaved on top. They were generous with the truffle amount, but believe me we paid dearly for them.\r
Next was a veal dish with procuitto which 3 people later said was salty and 2 felt the gargonzola overpowered. As for dessert, the server insisted we must have Taramisu. My husband said he didn't want it because he doesn't like Taramisu. The server ignored his remarks and an order was placed in front of him.. I don't like coffee flavors either and would never have chosen it , if given a choice. The bill was obscenely overpriced for what we got and it didn't include the liqour tab which is a whole other story... We felt we were totally taken advantage of. When going out to a fine restaurant with friends, the last thing someone wants to do is start making a fuss about the bill. Unfortunately, they use this to their advantage.

Terrible

The waiters were rude, trying to sell you the most expensive dish on the menu. Did not take no for an answer and were aggressive. The bill was way too high for the avarage meal that is far from the italian food me and my husband enjoyed living in Italy. I am also sorry for the staff to have to pretend to be Italian when they do not speak more then 2 words of that language. Our lunch has been a true disappointment and we would not consider going back there even if they would offer us a ...view morefree meal. Proceed with caution!

I arrived at San Pietro hearing great things and rave reviews. The atmosphere was nice and the servers were friendly. Our biggest mistake was to stray from the print menu and take suggestions from the waiter for appetizers and entrees. They will charge you whatever they want for their own creations, tagging on a huge bill for small portions of cheese and vegetables. After having the waiter bring us 4 of the ""suggested appetizers"" and enjoying 4 simple (and average at best) pasta entr...view moreees, the bill was well above expensive, it was almost a joke. When reviewing our bill at the end, we noticed that there was a couple of additional bottled waters tagged on and we still can't understand the outrageous cost that blindsided us...proceed with caution!view less

Loud management, tense dinner, dissatisfied diner

I am a business traveler who had heard of this restaurant and was very disappointed with the ambiance provided - the servers were professional but were constantly being yelled at by the manager in front of customers. The manager I found out later was the owner. He was so rude to his staff that we were making fun of the manager after a while. The food was average and the service was good but ambience was totally embarrassing for my server who kept apologizing for the owner's loud out...view morebursts to the staff. Spoiled the whole evening - it even appeared that the hostess on duty quit on the spot after asking the owner to tone down his outbursts because customers were getting uncomfortable.
San Pietro Restaurant is the only NYC restaurant that I would not recommend. It could have been a very pleasant dining experience.

Amazing 4 hr dinner

Truly an amazing dinner/experience; the 4 hours went by like minutes. Service started a little slow, but the server and food made up for the wait. Very attentive and amusing staff, wonderful food, excellent pace of food service. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a great meal for a decent price in the heart of the city. Great wine, though it is a bit $$ The cheapest bottle was $60, if I remember correctly.
