This place has a really amazing design and atmosphere I was surprised to see a place like this with such a poor service and average food that's everything but italian.
octopus apetizer tasted like nothing but garlic and the bottarga spaghetti only tasted like butter (at least use olive oil) the wine were a little overpriced too.

Horrible hostess

My husband and I live around the corner and decided to try the restaurant. We walked in on a Tueday late night and were eyed up and down by the hostess. I asked for a table and she said we needed reservations and they couldn't serve us tonight. She was incredibly full of herself and for some reason thought she was above us and had decided we weren't good enough to eat there. I inquired about the open tables and she responded that they were already reserved. So, we left and I called the restaurant from home to see if I could get a reservation for that night....of course we could. The same hostess answered the phone and said if we could come in the next 10 minutes we could be seated right away. We obviously did not go back. My first experience here was that it's pretty lame, and it will not be getting a second chance to change my mind.

Good food, great wine, lousy crowds

Having been there several times, the people are still not friendly. The food was really great though. The pizza was nice and the olives are to die for. Great wine selection and price is still competitive. The overall feel is a bit dungeon-like. The crowds tend to get a bit much, as people are flooding all over the place and hovering over your table. The wait staff cannot be bothered to help you out in that department. However, it is your own fault, I guess, to go on a weekend night or any late night for that matter.

Great experience! Amazing polenta, warm service.

Went there last week and had a wonderful experience. After you get past the door( which is all business) the meal was fantastic. Our server, a native New Yorker with an exotic name( can't remember her name) was extremely hospitable and guided us through the crazy all in Italian menu. Go there if you want the real deal.... no choose your own pasta and sauce here! The suckling pig is to die for and my husband had the pannacotta, delicious.

very good! viva italia!

great food, nice ambiance and very good service. Had a hard time ordering (confusing italian menu) and it was a bit pricey but overall very good experience!

Authentic Cuisine

They are not fooling around here. Its the real authentic Italian cuisine in a warm, rustic atmosphere. I've heard that this is where the foodies from Italy like to dine. Enjoy.

one of NY's most authentic Italian restaurants

Before you read any of the other reviews on here, let me tell you I've been here several times for quiet dinners and friends' birthdays.. this place is fantastic. Especially if you're interested in REAL Italian food. Don't go here if you're going to order a mundane pizza or boring spaghetti dish - then yes, you may think it's overpriced. I'd highly recommend the risotto or lasagna, both which are prepared with prime seasonal meat. The wine list is also extensive. It's true that your server will translate the entire menu to you from Italian - to me, what more could you ask for as the menu is incredibly original (compared to other Italian restaurants in the city). Ambiance is romantic and charming with low lighting and a slight view of the kitchen in the back. Perfecto!

Gold Pizza...

That was one of these cold nights my friend and i were in a good mood to go out after work and wanted to go in a nice and warm place, so i thought why don't we go to Peasant? we work in the neighborood.
As soon as we stepped in, we were in front of too girls, having a deep conversation who didn't pay attention to us (so when we left!!) which i suppose were the hostess and the coat check.
anyway they gave us a nice table. As soon as we set down, our waitress came to greet us and Translate the whole menu, since there is a lot to explain she had to go really fast and with her accent we did not understand half of it...after several misunderstandings, we finally ordered. We took that special white truffle pizza basically dough, cheese and just a little bit of shaved white truffles. when we were done, we looked 10 min to find our waitress to ask for the check. When we saw the price of that pizza $60 we were so suprised that i ask another waitress [since we couldn't find ours] to let me know the weight of the truffle in that pizza, after a long story she had never been able to tell me exactly. Whatever...i was really disappointed and next time i want to eat white truffle i will go at Alain Ducasse, at least you pay more but you have decent garnish with and that worth it!!!

Avoid at all costs

We went to Peasant for my sister's 30th birthday party and had possibly the worst experience in my 10 years of living in Manhattan. The service was beyond slow to begin with, and they squeezed too many people onto the bench tables in the wine bar to the point we could barely eat our food properly. Then our pregnant cousin came to join us and wanted to sit down and the vicious attitude that we encountered was something that I have never experienced. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. I talked to the Manager and he was completely uninterested in addressing our concerns. I think they have forgotten the level of quality and service that New Yorkers deserve and appreciate. Save yourself some hassle and go to any of the other restaurants on that block.
