General Info:
One if by Land, Two if by Sea is recognized as one of the New York s most romantic restaurants. The restaurant features American seasonal cuisine, fireplaces, candlelit tables, fresh flowers and live piano music. Its menu items include tart of wild mushroom, rack of Australian lamb, foie gras and braised duck terrine. The restaurant opened its doors in 1972. During the renovation process, workers uncovered four arched passageways in the building s basement that had been bricked-up long ago. Further excavation revealed that the passageways tunnel down Barrow Street to Hudson Street where the river s edge once met the city. Folklore suggests that these tunnels were used to smuggle contraband during The Revolutionary War and were once part of The Underground Railroad during America s Civil War.

Great place for a special dinner

Been here many times before. I have been to the best places in NY and the worst. I try not to let reviewers sway me since you never know their motives. The place is overpriced but the food is great. Never been disappointed.\r As to the last reviewer, The city gives out ratings on cleanliness not the quality of the food. How can you put health concious and foie gras in the same sentence?? How did the bass taste?? Pa... view more

Amongst the worst meals ever

It is difficult to describe the effects of food on a person's palate. My wife and I approached this restaurant due to the promise of a romantic ambience and appropriate decor reflective of our dedication and love to each other.\r \r The service was average and the waitress was not engaging in any manner. I cannot recommend the food as the foie gras appeared to be a slab of butter without texture or flavor. The s... view more

If you propose here...your a jackass

This is the kind of place that looks authentic through the window but when you get in you'll see that it resembles more of a 1970's basement refurbish ( with faux brickwork and sheetrock walls that were done over) than an intimate late 1700's eatery. Disneyland does a better job of recreating the era. The bartender was nice, but the waiter was an absentee drone who could care less if we were alive.\r The food was de... view more

pretty-romantic-overprised place

we came here for our anniversary, it was thanksgiving night, so we didn't expect we could get a table - but we actually did, and it was not a bad location at all - close to the summer garden and by the wall ( i hate to sit in the middle of the room) we were given a table in 3 min, the servers and the waiter were very friendly and attentive. The battery in camera died, so we asked if the waiter could help us out - and... view more

Beauty in vain

I am puzzled why anyone would give this restaurant more than 3 stars. Aside from the decor, beautiful especially the bar and fireplace, everything else is ghastly. \r I made reservations for a very special dinner a month prior to the date. On walking in, nobody is there to greet you. You need walk to the back past the bar, where the ""hostess"" is so ignorant and unprofessional it's an embarassment to the establ... view more

Top Romantic Restaurant

I came here with my boyfriend for Restaurant Week and was truly impressed. It has a great ambiance, excellent service and amazing food. The restaurant is dimly lit and has a piano player on site. It looks like an old castle inside with old oil paintings on the wall. For all the food we got, I love every single dish from the tangerine salad, red snapper to my citrus creme brulee. They also gave us a sample caulifl... view more

Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience

When my boyfriend and I stepped into this restaurant, we immediately felt transported into a different, romantic, old world era. What was previously a stable for horses has since been transformed into a most beautiful dining room complete with crackling fire place and baby grand piano. Amidst the tuxedoed servers, we felt like characters straight out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. \r The service was highly attenti... view more

No romance in the food

Romantic---yes. But so is Central Park on a perfect spring day. The difference is, you don't expect an edible meal in Central Park. Terribly disappointing.\r

overall dining

I used to dream about going to One if by Land, Two if by Sea and then, when I finally did get to go , I understood that some dreams can come true. A subdued atmosphere doesn't take away from the excellent service, presentation and overall dining experience at what is surely one of New York's top five restaurants.\r \r

Very nice

Its a great resturant. Dim lights, very romantic. Food was excellent, very fresh. Waiter was very knowledgable and attentive, but not overbearing. The place was hidden, hard to find, almost secluded. Didnt even look like a resturant from the front. Resturant staff = excellent. Overall experience = excellent\r I went there for resturant week. I been to other places for resturant week and quite frankly the servic... view more
