He has previously served as Chief of Orthopedics at Beth Israel North Hospital (1996-1998) and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center (1998-2004). He received his undergraduate degree (BS) from the University of Pennsylvania and his MD degree from Cornell University Medical College. His orthopedic training was at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
Joint Replacement
Dr. Long was a member of a select multicenter clinical work group that developed standards for less invasive peri-articular anesthetic injection protocols. The purpose of this panel was to improve and standardize techniques in an effort to improve pain management, rapid rehabilitation and recovery associated with less invasive joint replacement. The local infiltration of long-acting local anesthetic has helped push the boundaries of same day, and outpatient total hip and total- and partial knee arthroplasty, while improving patient comfort in the post-operative period.
Hip Replacement
New York, NY, January 14, 2008 – The surgeons of The Insall Scott Kelly® Institute (ISK) for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine today announced that hip pain is growing across the nation, affecting millions of Americans and causing significant disability. According to ISK, nearly 250,000 Americans will undergo Total Hip Replacement (THR) in 2008, the gold standard in surgical treatment of hip arthritis.
Knee Replacement
In addition to the long-term survivorship, a very high level of function was maintained. In those patients who did not suffer any significant progression of disease into other joints, or significant medical concerns, their activity levels have not fallen off at all since their last follow-up 15 years ago. This active, healthy cohort continued to engage in activities including jogging, tennis, golf and swimming into their fourth decade with a total knee replacement.

Doctor William J. Long MD FRCSC in collaboration with members of the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in New York NY recently presented a landmark paper on their 20-35 year outcomes in young patients with total knee replacements. The paper was well received at both the American Academy of Orthdopaedic Surgery annual meeting, and at the Knee Society open meeting, both in Chicago, in March 2013.
