Great dinner last night

Had a party for 8 people in the garden there last night. Picked that place by walking by and checking it out. Loved the garden, so invited my friends there for a celebratory dinner. Then went online read the reviews and was terrified. Tried to change the reservation, but it was too late. And I'm so happy I didn't, as we had a blast there!

We were greeted by a welcoming host and seated right away even though most of our party hadn't arrived yet. The food was great! The bread was fres

Everything was up to par. The atmosphere was very relaxed, it wasn't too crowded or too empty, not too noisy, not too quiet. My friends and I stayed there talking and laughing until almost midnight as nobody wanted to leave.
The garden is green and refreshing. Great option for al fresco Italian dining in East village! Would definitely go back and recommend to others! Sorry some people had a bad experience there. May be the restaurant changed something since then, as I definitely didn't encounter any of the things people here were complaining about.

Wedding rehearsal dinner

We have been going go gnocco for many years, and have never been disappointed by the food or service. They are both always exceptional.

Because of this, we decided to have our wedding rehearsal dinner at the restaurant, and it was absolutely fantastic. They accommodated our group of 25, and nothing about the evening was disappointing. Our server, Lauren, was absolutely fantastic and was always there when you needed her, but also never made us feel rushed or pressured which is amazi

The food was great, as always.

It was a great experience that I will never forget, and I'll have wonderful memories every time that I go back (which will be many).

Atrocious service, terrible experience

My friends and I went to Gnocco for the first time a few weeks ago - and I can wholeheartedly say that it will be the LAST. Upon arrival, we were escorted to the back patio area - covered in plywood walls and cement, I would hardly call this ""atmosphere"" but that much we could have lived with. We were told by the ungracious and unprofessional hostess that we had an hour and 45 minutes to eat before the next party. I understand the need to turn over tables, but to be given that rest...view moreriction by the hostess before we had even taken our coats off?? How is that supposed to make us feel welcome or add to our dining ""experience""?? I have NEVER been sat at a table with a prefaced time restraint. That was incredibly off-putting and further vetted by the waiter who was practically shoving us out the door. He couldn't present us with the check fast enough, did not even ask us if we wanted dessert, and immediately 2 people (including our server) came over to check if our bill was paid while we were still trying to finish the bottle of wine we had purchased. It was a horrific dining experience on every level. I emailed the management at Gnocco to let them know about our utter disappointment, and never received any sort of acknowledgment - which leads me to believe the ungracious staff is taking their cue from management.view less

Mixed Experience

This review is somewhat delayed-- I was at Gnocco about three weeks ago when it was warmer in the city. I was there with two friends around 9pm. The restaurant was relatively full at that time. We were seated in the garden as it was a nice night. I had a fresh salad and a pizza, which was pretty good. One friend tried the pasta, which seemed slightly undercooked. Our waiter did okay considering how many other tables he had. So, why not give them three stars, you ask? Because I was bitt...view moreen by mosquitos like I have never been before. I have been in the city a long time, and the outdoor and garden dining experience is not new to me. But I have never left a restaurant so itchy or had memories of a meal as present as I have now in the way of the still-healing marks on my legs. Both of my friends had the same problem. And when we asked about citronella candles or anything to ward the bugs away, our waiter pointed to a lone candle at the waiters' station-- of course, that would be helpful to them, but not to diners. The food was okay, but not good enough to get me to try them again, not even in winter. My suggestion, if you live nearby, would be to order takeout.view less

Bad experience

I went to Gnocco last night and was very disappointed with both the food and service. The garden was nice and the pizza was good but the rest of the dishes were bland and tasteless and the service was unpleasant. Someone had recommended this place to me as having a good atmosphere but we didn't find this to be true at all. We will not be going back.

Genuinely home-made food in a pleasant atmosphere

Amazing experience!!! I was over last Friday with few friends and everybody was really happy!! We reserved our table online (yes you can... although we had to wait about 10/15 minutes to be seated). Many ""yummy"" things in the menu, which our super-nice waiter explained to us almos item by item, Interesting wine list, many, many different wines but only Italian. The food is really great: we had the truffle pizza, whole wheat pasta, the ""gnocco"" bread with prosciutto, beef carpaccio,...view more filet mignon with wine reduction and few other things I cannot recall right now. The staff is great, everybody seems on top ov everything, from the waiters to the bus boys, especially the manager, a big guy with a big warm smile, who was constantly checking about our ""happiness"" and make sure we were feeling at home. A delicious desserts trio (tiramisu', Italian Cheese Cake and the AMAZING nutella calzone) has been the triumphal end of our meal.\r
\r
Thank you guys for this experience: great people, friendly/family atmosphere, very nice and friendly staff, great food and wine choice... and the price wasn't that bad.\r
\r
I'll be back, for sure... I would suggest to reserve your table in advance, especially Friday and Saturday night.

WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD -- DO NOT DINE HERE

I went here for brunch with 3 people, and after 22 years of living and dining in New York City, I must say this was the worst service I've ever been subjected to in this city.

Although the service was extremely slow in an empty restaurant, that issue is to be expected at times. What was unforgivable was the rude, condescending and outright hostile attitude of everyone who works there -- even the busboy.

We waited 30 minutes in a near-empty restaurant to have our orders taken. On
...view moree of us asked if he could get mushrooms in his omelet, and was told ""No"" with no explanation. When we got our food I asked for ketchup, and I was told that it was not possible. We were offered refills of our coffee cups (did not ask for them), but were charged for each one on the bill. When we asked about it, we were told by the hostess ""This is not a diner"" and that we should feel fortunate because they decided not to charge us for all the refills. Then came the real zinger: ""But, if it's a huge awful problem for you, I guess we could take it off."" What the hell is that?!? To top everything off, when we tried to pay we were condescendingly told that our cards were not acceptable and that they only take American Express.

All in all, the entire experience was uncomfortable and even hostile. A restaurant should never make the customer feel unwelcome and afraid to make even basic requests. The admittedly pretty good food was nowhere near good enough to justify the hostile, rude and disgusting treatment we received. And from the looks of other reviews, this behavior appears to be a trademark of Gnocco.

BEST italian food in NYC

Gnocco is a great discovery for me. This place would be high standard in Italy as well (and I know what I am talking about). Their famous dish ""Il gnocco"" is the perfect merge of soft and crispy and moreover is not as greasy as you sometimes find it in Central Italy; the rest of the menu tasty and with a twist of fantasy (enough of meatballs and alfredo sauce, they have real ideas in here) and the internal garden lovely in every season. Definetely the best meal I had in Manhattan and...view more reasonably priced (that is not easy in the city where everything is over-rated)view less

got sick from the beef carpaccio

service was mediocre, yellowed greens, no effort made on presentation or quality. hadn't eaten anything all day, had the beef carpaccio, became ill 5 hours later. not surprised, this restaurant has seen better days and needs to reinvent themselves.

Horrible Service! Rude Server!

I went for a first date on a Friday night around 9pm and was seated promptly by a very pleasant young woman. The menu selection was lovely and the food was very good - not the best I've had in NYC but for the price, I'd say it was comparable. The decor was nice - we were able to sit in the outdoor garden area. BUT OUR SERVER! So unbelievably rude! Everything was done with a sigh and an eye roll! It took him forever to get to our table and then with a slight eye roll he condescend...view moreingly asked if we were ready to order - as though he had been waiting on US for 15 minutes! But before we could answer him he took up a conversation with another server! When he finally did get back to us, everything we said or did seemed to not be worth his time. I wasn't starving so I ordered an appetizer as my meal and that just aggravated him to the point he felt it was relevant and necessary to abrasively remind me it was an appetizer. We had two bottles of expensive wine and yet we were still treated as though we were below his standards. I WILL NEVER GO BACK! There are too many restaurants in NYC - they should seriously re-evaluate the attitudes of their servers if they want to stay open with so much competition out there.view less
