Had my sister's graduation dinner at Ed's - service was really poor. Our waitress seemed like she was in a hurry to get us out; never once came by to check on us. The manager had to come by to introduce himself. The appetizers were great our entrees were okay. Overall I'm not sure if I'll be back.Provided by Citysearch

My husband took me to Ed’s for my birthday and I was blown away...the food was fantastic, the service was great, the décor – white leather banquettes, rich, dark wood, mirrors & crystal - elegant but not stuffy - I loved it! I'm originally from the Boston area so I'm very particular about my seafood and I loved the pureed lobster bisque... rich, creamy & smooth. We split a surf & turf - filet mignon & grilled jumbo shrimp...both were great. And I asked 1) if we could have some of t...view morehe vegetables that were in the combination dinners & they said, ‘Sure!’ and 2) if there might possibly be some béarnaise sauce for the filet mignon. Our waiter said he’d ask and a few minutes later returned with some béarnaise sauce the chef ‘whipped up’ just for me! The mashed potatoes with caramelized onions and bacon were delicious as were the garlic collard greens. The lemon meringue tart and banana cream pie with shaved chocolate desserts were mouth-watering . Our waiter and porters & the manager, Louis, were very attentive and friendly. It’s hard to believe the people who wrote the previous, negative reviews were at the same restaurant!view lessProvided by Citysearch
After reading rave reviews from Time Out magazine, I made sure to run over for a sampling. For a $70 lunch I expect clams in my clam chowder. The ladies sitting next to us and had the trio of soups and said they didn't like any of them. The couple on the other side said they had no clams in their chowder. The crab cake was fantastic. The lobster roll was loaded with lobster, the rest of the ingrdients let us down. Am I wrong or should the waiter be filling my glass with sparkling wa...view moreter.......well I did it for us. The room is gorgeous. I didnt realize they opened a month and a half ago. Not expecting to go back. Tried reaching management but found it impossible on line. (The manager did take the chowder off the bill and gave us a small bowl of' 'freshly made soup. Still wasn't impressed.)view lessProvided by Citysearch
As others have mentioned, Ed's Chowder House has a few bright points (nice decor, good corn chowder, lobster value), however the horrible service is such a drawback that I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.
As other have mentioned, the service was nowhere near what should be expected for a restaurant offering $3 oysters, $20-30 entrees, and $10-13 drinks.
It must have been the waiter's first day since he did not know anything on the menu, failed to serve the entrees app...view moreropriately, and didn't return with drinks for almost 30 minutes.
As ""TheSkinny"" mentioned, I would have been happy to have people ""hover"" near the table, at least the service would have improved a bit.
The decor is nice, but the drawbacks are enough to make us forgo another visit.view less
Unless you're 65 or older they won't pay any attention to you. We recently went in for dinner and had some of the worst service we've ever had. We both live in Manhattan and dine at nice restaurants frequently (not that Ed's is considered a nice restaurantby any means). In fact, we had been to Center Cut and had a wonderful experience. All I can say is they should have kept the wait and kitchen staff.
While the food wasn't as expensive as Center Cut, I'd rather pay more to have so...view moremething edible and have service that is respectful.
Our server? I swear this was his first job waiting tables. When we told management that it had been 25 minutes and we didn't even have our drinks yet, nothing was done. The manager never even came to check on us. Meanwhile the 2 couples seated next to us spending their social security checks, dressed as if they were in an Atlantic City casino, were fawned over. Inexcusable. I really hope they were worth it and left a good tip, because we did not.view less
The smoked cod cakes were great as was the tuna steak. My friend had the fluke which was colorful and big on flavor and texture. All in all a great place to have been open barely a week when I went. The waiter seemed to know his stuff but was clearly being pulled in 5 different directions my management micromanaging his next move. It would have been nice to see him do things his way. Nevertheless, I will be back. I just hope there aren't 6 ""suits"" hovering about. It started to make ...view moreme nervous.
P.S. Who is in charge of not having almost year old reviews from Centercut on the Ed's Chowder House page?view less
Our waiter was so bad he was sent home midway during our meal. I'm not kidding. That bad. And the assistant manager, who tried to recover, still had some fatal flaws that will keep me from returning. It doesn't matter if this place has just opened, this wasn't the ""B"" team on duty, it was more like the untrained, unexperienced ""D"" team. First, we were made to wait at the bar though we were on time for our 7pm reservation and the restaurant was 3/4 empty. We had a waiter that talk...view moreed way too much, volunteering what the ""best deals"" were on price for cocktails without us asking, told me I couldn't have add a splash of elderflower liqueur to my glass of champagne when I ordered it because the liqueur was ""outrageously expensive"" and ""doled out carefully by the bartender"" (I would have had no problem paying extra). Our orders never were put into the computer so 1 1/2 hours later we were still waiting for our soup. He also told us Ed's special chowder was red sauce based (so I didn't order it) but it isn't, it is cream based (and good, my dining companion had it). The chowder tasting was just so-so. The NE clam chowder was watery and underseasoned. The corn chowder was just what it was. The Manhattan clam chowder was the best of the three - nicely seasoned. The assistant manager who took over didn't check on what we had ordered immediately so as to get our main courses in (causing more delays), didn't pull out the table next to us so the little old lady could easily get out. He also removed our empty drink glasses without asking if we wanted another round. Though he took a hefty percentage off the bill, it was the end of the night and the comedy of errors just wasn't so funny any more. The only highlight? The grilled lobster was lovely. Cooked perfectly, yummy sauce that didn't overpower. The bread was great too (though we had to ask twice to have it brought to our table and that was after 45 minutes post-seating). 81 sets the bar high in terms of service, service at Ed's Chowder House was abysmal. What a shame.view lessProvided by Citysearch
I haven't been to this restaurant and I wanted to try. So I look at the 3 most recent reviews...wow, quite detailed on the food and very generous on how fabulous everything was.......um, except that they all sound like they're written by the same person....on the same day Jan 7, 2009. hahaha, how pathetic. the ""reviewers"" only wrote for this one restaurant. coincidence? maybe, but i doubt it.Provided by Citysearch
i really enjoy dining out in the city and have been to alot of steak houses. my wife and i went to center cut last night and i must say i really enjoyed the food. my wife and i really think jeffery chodorow did a fantastic job with this eatery. we started of with the baby iceburg lettuce and blue cheese with bacon lardons for myself and my wife had the tomato and mozzeralla dish they were great. my iceburg was very cool its a baby iceburg head of lettuce not a wedge but a baby head ve...view morery cool. i had the nyc classic with mushrooms and onions, the steak was tender and very flavorful. the steaks come in different sizes according to your appetite. for a side dish i had the cream spinach pie it was delicious i could have eaten two of them. my wife had the rossini she loves foie gras it was wonderful as well. the foie was a nice portion and sauce was rich and flavorful. she had the mushroom studel with truffle and that was awesome as well. we finished with a bannans foster which by the way is made table side lots of dazzle.the servers were warm and attentive as well as the rest of the staff. i failed to mention the bar! very cool! its quartz and is uplight which has this amazing warm glow to it. the dining room was rich yet very inviting and relaxing. we had a nice view and it was just a perfect night for the both of us. i would highly reccomend this place to my family and friends which seemed to be the atmosphere here.view lessProvided by Citysearch
My friends and I had a delicious dinner at Center Cut. We've been to the other steakhouses where they basically walk you through a preset menu and every experience is like the last. Boring. Not so at Center Cut. While they brought back some classic steak options to the menu, they do it in a modern way. The divers scallops app was a great starterd, really flavorful. Our entres were perfect. My Steak Oscar felt a little decadent but in a good way with the blue crab stuffed artichoke and...view more the bearnaise sauce. My Chicago friends were more than impressed with their meals too. The service was great. We had a friendly and approachable waiter who was around just enough. It didn't have that factory feel some ""legendary"" steakhouses have. We also consulted the somalier who had excellent suggestions and added to the experience. Hardly any room for dessert but we shared one of the ice cream dishes just for kicks anyway. Loved it. I would bring folks back to Center Cut in a heartbeat. We didn't get a chance to hang out in the bar since we were seated right away, but that bar itself looks very cool. I'd try going back just for drinks there.view lessProvided by Citysearch
