Authentic Chinese Cuisine at Affordable Prices
Chef Yu serves up deliciously spicy dishes at his namesake restaurant in the Garment District. His specialties are the beef tendon and marinated beef with hot pepper sauce, but that doesn't mean all Yu's dishes aren't standouts! Not only are they delicious, but they are inexpensive. In fact, the lunch specials exceed fifteen meal options all under $6.99.

Went to this place a few times. Very nice. Food is good and prices aren't bad.

The options around here are pretty dreadful. This place has been a refuge for me. The food is fairly good for the price and the noodle soups are a savior in this weather. Although I'm a fan of variety, I find myself here pretty frequently. The lunch special are good value here, the ambiance is not bad for a Chinese restaurant and the noodle soups are wonderful here.

Decent Chinese restaurant with fine decor and quick delivery/takeout. Their cuisine is Sichuan style so for spicy eaters, this is a good spot. Lunch special comes with a house salad with their special in-house spicy dressing. I personally think their dishes are a little too greasy at times although the flavor is authentic and tasty. In the West 30s area, this is definitely still one of the best Chinese restaurants.

We were waiting for a table and the hostess offered us a table that was up against a coat rack. We said no to that table and said we would wait a bit longer for a suitable table. Then we were finally seated we saw that other people were being served that came after us and we hadn't even had our order taken. My date went to the bar and ordered drinks and tried to get service. Finally a waitress with a nasty attitude came after 20 minutes and asked if we were ready to order, imagine that. We couldn't even get a glass of water. The wait staff didn't even take away the dirty dishes from the appetizer when they brought the main course. The bill came and we noticed a service charge. We asked the waitress what that was and she said she didn't know and she came back with a waiter that asked us not so politely to pay the bill. We did pay the bill including the service charge and left. Needless to say we won't be back for poor service, nasty attitude and the surprise service charge on a dinner for two. I'd rather go elsewhere where they actually earn a tip by giving good service and are not expecting a service charge for poor service.

My table and I waited over 30 minutes to get served...the staff at Chef Yu really needs to get a clue.

I am Chinese who went to Chef Yu with a bunch of caucasian friends. We past by the place and thought it looked promising and priced reasonably. We ordered Mai Tai, and it was great! However, that was pricey...$9 (Aug 2008). I had the whole fish in hot bean sauce. It was below my expectation. The fish wasn't fresh and it taste like it had been fried a few days before. The sauce was alright but since the fish wasn't fresh, I didn't particularly enjoy it.\r \r My friends separately ordered slices of beef in oyster sauce and slices of beef with green peppers. The former seems alright and my friend enjoyed it but the latter had a disproportionate amount of tofu in it. There was hardly any beef!\r \r Anyhow, this place has a good atmosphere and we enjoyed the cosy background ambience that complimented the conversation. However, I wouldn't come here for the cuisine alone.

This is a good place to go in a pinch for a quick business meeting or after work drinks. However, some of the staff at this spot have the worst attitudes I have ever encountered. They can be very nasty for no reason at all. They greet you so rudely and act as if they are doing you a favor for allowing you to eat in their establishment. I mean if you can ignore that, it?s a cool place. The food is pretty good and the prices are too.

We went for New York for a long weekend and wanted to have a nice dinner on Saturday. When we passed Chef Yu (corner of 8th Ave and 36street), it looked appealing. Very cosy, which is quite hard to find in New York, unless you want to spend big bucks.\r And guess what? The food was GREAT and the prices very modest.\r \r As a starter we had Shrimp Dumplings: 8 dumplings for the price of only $5.99 and springrolls around $2. The portion of the springrolls was very small, but then again, so was the price. The dumplings were really very tasty.\r For main course we had Prawns with mango ($13.25) and Prawns with vegetables ($11.95). And it was full of prawn: 9 in each dish! Top that of with a nice Pinot Grigio of only $7 and a coke of $1.60. and we had a complete meal for a mere $45 dollars and it was very very nice.\r \r So I recommend going to Chef Yu if you like good chinese food for affordable prices in a cosy atmosphere.
Great for lunchtime take-out. Prices for happy hour and very good. Chef Yu has the best Young Chow Fried rice. My stop at least once a week.

I've been staying in NYC for a few weeks and Chef Yu is the only decent Chinese restaurant within walking distance from where I was staying. Luckily the food is pretty good. I ate there 3 times in 2 weeks. Decent service. Good Chinese food. I'd definitely recommend this place to people.

I ordered the chicken with eggplant and received a flavorless glob of mushy eggplant swimming in a pool of grease. The chicken had some flavor but was also drenched in the grease. I estimate that the plate contained about 1/2 cup of pure oil. My dinner partner ordered a beef dish that was slightly less greasy. If you are planning for a heart-attack, this is the restaurant to help you get there.

The ambience is great; the food pretty good; the wait staff fantastic. I was truly surprized with find this on 8th Av. When I return to the city I'll dine there again with my friends. Another thing the drinks were pretty cheap because of the hour I had dinner.

Came here for dinner with a friend and was not too impressed with the food and more surprised at their prices. Descent place but would rather take train to Chinatown and get some authentic chinese.\r
