As for our Dinner menu, where guests can find culinary pleasure in a varied number of highly satisfying selections, the Classic Surf & Turf has never failed to please, nor has our favorite form of filet mignon, the Filer Oscar, which is served with a healthy amount of crabmeat and a topping of Hollandaise sauce. That Was Then This is Now

A friend asked about BVs and we looked at the reviews and I see there are reviews on Yelp for the other locations but this one hasn't been reviewed since May, 2011 so I thought I should represent - I've going there for over a year and everytime the service has been excellent, no attitude from very friendly staff. I've shared the porterhouse, had the burgers, salads, the veggies, (love the fries & onion rings, broccoli rabe), the desserts are fine, it's too bad the negative reviews are one shot bad experiences - of course if you're going to spend so much money on a dinner, you want to come out feeling like you got your money's worth and not like you paid top steak dollar for Outback Steakhouse. I used to like the Palm & Palm Too but this place is more intimate and sexier. My only piece of negative feedback is you can never really tell if they're open because it's a little recessed from the sidewalk and dark on the outside and you have to step down a couple of steps - but i guess it makes me feel like I know a little secret place....

Terrible Food, Steak was Aweful

First time there and I was completely disappointed. The tuna tartar was disgusting. Normally, especially for that excessive price, it'll come out as one solid piece of tuna, slightly seared on the edges. This one looked like they chopped pieces of raw tuna and crammed it into a tuna can, flipped it over and covered it with mint sauce. Yuck!! OK, strike one, figured I still had my steak to come out. It got worse. My dish came out and my ""medium"" prepared steak looked like a leather shoe, and most certainly, tasted like one. I mentioned something to the waiter, and he said that's ok, just cut it in the middle and forget the edges. What? It was dry and had no flavor. When you spend this much money on a steak at a famous steakhouse, it is a crime to need to request A1 steaksauce or ketchup, just to give it flavor. I should have realized what I was getting myself into when my coworkers, who had come there before, indicated the best meal at the famous steakhouse is the fish. Go figure. I will never go there again, and, I recommend no one else does either. Why throw your good money away when there are so many better options in NYC?

Not the best but pretty good

There are better steak houses in the city, but this is one of the better ones. Atmosphere is not particularly special. Service is good. Steaks came the way we ordered them.

Judgemental Service

The sevice was so judgemental when ordering from restaurant week's prefix menu. Comment to Bobby Van's - you CHOSE to participate! If you're going to let ordering from the prefix menu influence the service, then don't sign up for restaurant week! I've been here many times for a $2K+ expensed lunch (don't we all miss those days!) I decided to go for the $35 prefix (if I wanted to pay full price for a steakhouse, I'd choose Wolfgang's in a heartbeat!) Snub me & charge me $1 more/glass than listed on your wine menu. Sorry that you need it! Thank God Wolfgang's opened up close by (200 East 54th Street/Third Avenue), I know where to take my next expensed lunch!

Good Food Poor Service

I've been to this nice restaurant last night and the athmosphere is really warm and inviting. The bar is always busy serving people waiting to have dinner.
The room was very crowded and loud. The waiters are nice but a little rushy and rude. The fact that they ""dump"" drinks in the glass from the bottle handled upside down (specially wine) is not classy for a restaurant that expensive. Mixing wines from one bottle to another make me understand that they're not wine expert. The space around the tables does not allow them to move without passing in front of a person or serving properly, and nobody asked if we were happy with the food that we ordered. A little bit of training wouldn't hurt.
The main course was good, even though the presentation is not inviting.
There is room for improvement.

Lunch? You want Lunch?

Lunch is for suckers.....I'm not your average BSD....ABC, you know Always Be Closing. How big is your house, car, sinep, etc. This is the typical garbage you'll hear in this place. So if you are outside the area and going here on a whim, you should know what to expect from the big bank crowd. They hang out here when they aren't jumping off bridges or buildings.

Good food, but disappointing service

I have eaten at many top restaurants in the city, including Bobby Van's downtown location, and I was deeply disappointed by the level of service my group of 6 received. Our meals were not brought out at the same time, and at no point did the server inquire about the quality of our food. An additional place setting that we did not need was removed in the middle of our dinner service. While these may seem like small transgressions, they are well below what I would expect at a fine dining establishment.

Stay away from Bobby!

I have never posted any negative ratings before. I feel I have to write something about this place though... Can you think of a restaurant in Manhattan with lame service and disgusting steaks for $46? Correct! This is Bobby Van's Steakhouse at 131 E. 54th street. Hostess and waiters made me feel like an invisible man... A simple steak was being cooked for 35 minutes and still served half-done! Probably, this was wrong time... The waiter referred to the ""transition"" (dinner crew changed lunch crew)... Is it a good excuse?

astonishingly inept service

Went on an off night a few weeks ago, were sat late (we had a reservation). The service was discombobulated: I'm still not sure if one waiter attends to a table of if it's more of a free-for-all scenario: in any event, wine service was glacial and the food took an unbearably long time (apparently because a large table ordered before us, we were offered as an explanation). Then, the piece de resistance: a furry creature (this site doesn't let you type the name of said rodent) scurrying across the floor. What was the reaction? An apology and yet another explanation -- not a remedy. Not a cent taken off the bill, not a free round of drinks, manager appearance, nothing. For a tremendously expensive meal I was as underwhelmed. The steak was fantastic, however - as was the rest of the food.
