    nice with a major flaw

    Provided by

potentially a very nice place, but they ruin it by playing their stereo system at intolerable levels. Imagine a crowded room of people yelling at each other in order to heard over the driving bass... Not at all recommended for conversation.

Exactly What I Wanted in a Coffeehouse

    Provided by

It took me months to finally find a coffe shop with the atmosphere I was looking for. The coffee is not great (still better than Starbucks and day), but I just love the people there (customers and staff). It is usually really loud, which is great for drowning out the chatter so as to focus on work, but not so great for a date. Oh, and you must have a Green Tea Lemon Cookie!!!

    not impressed

    Provided by

I had a terrible experience at 71 Irving The staff was rude, the place was overcrowded, and when I got my tea is was cold. My advice is to skip this spot and head over to The Tea Set, which in the West Village just west of Greenwich Ave. BuywithmeNYC has a great deal going on with The Tea Set you pay just $15 and get $30 worth of food/drinks, making it the perfect time to try out their great variety of organic teas! If you're not into teas, they have a great selection of champagnes, too. You can learn more about the deal here: htt://bit.ly/b5pi8b‎. Enjoy!! =)

    Rude staff, inconsistent coffee

    Provided by

The staff is very rude and they rarely even look you in the eye. The coffee is very harsh and inconsistent. One time I asked the chubby faced face girl why the coffee was cold. She replied ""because you have milk in it"" Duh....a little milk should not make the coffee cold. On many occasions I have had cold coffee. Why do I go? Because all the coffee places in the area have shut down. Tisserie, Barroco... Bagels are decent and so are the pastries.

    Great coffee. Charming Place.

    Provided by

This is my go-to place. Meeting friends, after-dinner coffee, need to catch up on some work, Sunday brunch. Best coffee around. Always consistent. Good food: sandwiches, salads, yogurt, bagels, pastries. I highly recommend.

    Best Coffee in NYC

    Provided by

I live in the area and I keep returning to 71, although I can get coffee at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or the local Food Emporium. What makes this place outstanding is their coffee. period. Once you have a sip you will understand. Often the staff do have attitude, but I think when the manager is there like yesterday they were on their best behavior. ok, back to the coffee--the house coffee bursts in your mouth with layers of body and a beautiful aroma. It is also not overly strong like Starbucks. The sinful delight tastes like there is melted chocolate in it, although there is no syrup. The coffee beans are also locally (Hudson Valley) roasted and hand blended daily. I feel the scene is full of NYU students in graduate programs, professors and local businesspeople which make it fun to hang out. it is also away from the masses of union square. I often go there to relax, read a bit, meet a friend, people watch. All and all a great little hideaway.

    good coffee- miserable service

    Provided by

i live in the area and frequent the coffee shop (almost) daily. Although the coffee/drinks are consistent and good, most of the 71 Irving employees are so incredibly miserable. Look, there are 2 employees that I can think of that are actually pleasant/helpful, but most of the employees have a massive chip on their shoulder. It's like they forget they're in the service industry. If you hate your job (or deem yourself too worthy to be in the job you're in), please go do something else with your life... why should customers (paying a LOT of money for coffee and over-priced carbs) have to put up with your perpetually nasty attitude? Really, a lot of the women who work there are seriously mean... it's almost comical!

    Count your change!

    Provided by

Let me start by saying I've been going to 71 Irving for years now... And always love it because it's a wonderful neighborhood joint.\r \r However, more than 5 times, I've been given the wrong change---missing anywhere from a quarter to a $5 bill. The first few times I thought it could've been a mistake. However, now I'm convinced that it isn't.

    Rude staff

    Provided by

This place has potential, unfortunately the rude staff ruines every visit. I live in the area and have tried it out many times and it's not an outlier experience. Every visit is the same. I wish they would change and tone down the attitude and I would come there every day, not once a quarter as now is the case. I doubt they will though considering that the place is always packed.

    Tell you what

    Provided by

The coffee is good, I should know cause I'm really picky about coffee. The staff is rude, I should know because I'm a member of the staff and they are rude to me. I'll smile when you come in though.\r \r Oh PS the chicken salad is really good and made fresh\r \r

    Sinful Delight

    Provided by

I never could tell the difference between the various coffee flavors at other shops - they were all rather bland to me - until I tried Sinful Delight at 71 Irving Place. Loved it, loved it, loved it. \r \r Cons - could be a bit crowded. My friends and I almost gave up and left when a table finally freed up, and it was a lousy rainy day, too.

    Not at all worth it

    Provided by

The coffee is not all that great, for the price, and, the staff is VERY rude!! the music is very loud and you have to scream in order for your friends to hear you! Don't even waste your time.

    Weak coffee and service

    Provided by

I live near 71 so it's convenient but that's all it has to offer. It's always crowded, the staff is indifferent to rude, the coffee is nothing special and everything is absurdly overpriced.

    Not good

    Provided by

Very crowded. Overpriced. Rude staff. AND the coffee is mediocre. I recommend you save yourself the disappointment.

    Overpriced and just average coffee

    Provided by

71 is another place that has been over-hyped and overrated. The coffee is above average but not worth going out of your way for if there is a Starbucks closer. As for the menu items, they are way over-priced and of meager portions. As for the decor, the room is dark, small, and uncomfortable. Service is at the counter and basic. I guess this place is popular for those working on their resumes and looking to be seen but this is not a place to go if you are looking for a coffeehouse and a place to relax and read the newspaper in comfort.

    Best coffee shop in nyc

    Provided by

My favorite coffee shop in the city where you don't feel like you are in the city! Great coffee, hot chocolate and fresh baked rice krispy treats. My favorite place to escape with my boyfriend on the weekends when we want a relaxing/cozy night. I wish this pace could be kept a secret because its one of a kind in manhattan!!

    great expectations

    Provided by

It's nice to have a place like this in the neighborhood, but my experience did not leave me with that warm, fuzzy ""neighborhood coffee shop"" feeling. It's cute inside and outside, but the latte I had was poorly made and partially spilled on the saucer. Staff was a little ""too cool,"" but I'm finding that this attitude is common in New York. The girls talking loudly nearby discussed how all their friends are ""European."" On the whole, it gave me uncomfortable flashbacks to my student days in Paris. Quel dommage.

    Have stopped going there

    Provided by

Four of us went to 71 in late December of 2005 and really liked it. The interior was charming and very much a ""real"" coffeehouse (and they don't mind if you linger), the desserts were sinfully-delicious and the coffee was very good, the staff were exceptionally friendly & personable....three of us returned there in late June of 2007 and the staff were incredibly *rude*; especially the person who took our orders. Having had such a positive experience the previous time, two of us decided to try it once more (in late December of 2007). Although the staff wasn't *as* rude as what we'd encountered the second time, they were still very unfriendly. Despite the charm of the interior and the convenience to Union Square, we won't return - and judging from many of the other reviews, our one positive experience was actually an exception at 71.

    Great spot in Grammercy

    Provided by

For all those who hate Starbucks...this is your place...What a real coffee spot should be...the coffee is great....service is quick...the only tough thing is waiting in line, because you have to stand next to their muffin and cake windows (they are so smart)...my wife loves to go there and read or write.

    Amazing Little Place

    Provided by

I love 71 I go there every night of the week I can't live without my cup of 71 house coffee. The store has a great atmosphere amd amazing staff who are always there to help if its a cup of coffee or a nice chat. There are a few amazing staff members who make coming in a great time. There is one guy who works nights and a few days here and there who is so fun to talk to and always has something funny to say. I think his name is Mike or something. So to those who hate 71 we would all rather you go to Starbucks and drink your freakinchinos!!!
