This place does not present itself in the same glam manner as its neighbor (and primary competition) Sucre, but their product is by far the best of their dessert niche. They make all of their gelato from scratch (that is, without a 'base' - have you ever been to an ice cream shop and while all the flavors taste different, there's something that they all have in common? usually a light vanilla flavor that most places just mix the flavors into so everything kinda tastes the same). As far as I know they are the only place in New Orleans that does not use a base as a shortcut. Their cookies, also homemade, are outstanding, decadent and fresh. They drizzle syrup on the oatmeal cookies at some point in the process. I don't much like oatmeal cookies, but they're outstanding. The espresso is of a notably higher quality than the local coffeeshops (ones I have loved for years) - i.e. CC's (close call) Rue, PJs (blows their espresso away). They use as much green technology and disposable products as possible. For the environmentally responsible, this is a pretty unique distinction. These people basically spend extra money to make sure their footprint is just a little smaller. Never had their actual food, but as well done as their coffee / dessert items are, I'm very willing to try it if I ever make it there during a proper meal time. In short, try this place. Not flashy like the place next door, but superior in the common services.
I recently had my daughter's 7th Birthday party @ Cafe au Clay and I have to say it was the best party ever. We had 25 kids attending and everything was so perfect, they played around, painted some pottery (not just pottery, but real masks handcrafted there) and just had a great time! The owner, Kate, and her staff made every effort to make us and our guests feel at home (and believe me, at some point I thought I was home...). And the best of all, NO MESS TO CLEAN UP, they took care of everything!!!! Almost everyone made a positive comment on the place and also on how lovely and welcoming they made us feel. I highly recommend it not only for a party or event, but also for a fun and relaxing treat to yourself. Thanks, Kate!!
If looking for Mid-Eastern Food at Great Prices, this is the best to eat. Not only is it casual, you can bring your own alcohol with NO corking fee. This is definitely a Plus for the many wine consumers. Sandwiches and Entree's prices remain the same for day and night dinning. The wait staff is very prompt and the kitchen can always handle the crowd without missing a beat. The cafe also offers side walk dinning under umbrellas. The Mid-Eastern Food is excellent and always served hot! Get there early on the weekend, (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) as there is always a crowd. The crowd is always a mixed group from all professions including college students.
