We recently noticed that Dr. McDermott's dog, Ora, was starting to get bad breath, and some tartar was building up on her teeth. We decided that this would be a great opportunity to give her a cleaning and document her day. That way, we could show you exactly what we do for our patients when they come in for a dental procedure.
Vaccination

Behavioral Counseling
Nutritional Counseling
Symptoms of Cytauxzoonosis include sudden, severe illness characterized by lethargy, loss of appetite, high fever, pain, depression, and dehydration. Symptoms usually present within 5 - 14 days of infection. The disease then progresses rapidly and, once symptoms present, can lead to death within 2 - 3 days.
Comprehensive Examination
During the visit with your veterinarian and their staff, you will review habits and behavior that may signal changes in health. This review will prompt you to think about what is going on with your cat and have a different perspective which may help in identifying signs of illness. In addition, your veterinarian will perform a physical exam which will play a significant role in determining where your cat is in the aging process, and what can be done to keep it as healthy as possible for as long as possible.
The only defense against Cytauxzoonosis is prevention. The best prevention is to routinely and consistently apply a reputable, veterinary-approved flea and tick preventative, such as Frontline Gold or Bravecto. It is also recommended that you regularly check your cat for ticks, especially those that have access to the outdoors.
Pain Management
Dr. Kerri A. McDermott is a 2011 graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a New Jersey native, who lived in Montana prior to moving to North Carolina; and is now very excited to have put down roots in Virginia. Dr. McDermott loves veterinary medicine, and is passionate about serving you and your pets. While she finds all aspects of medicine fascinating, she has particular interests in preventative medicine, pain management, dermatology, dentistry, and ultrasound.
Is ready to go under anesthesia. Dr. McDermott gives injectable anesthesia, then intubates Ora and places her on anesthetic gas. Monitoring equipment is placed so we can keep track of her heart rate and rythm (ECG), her temperature, how well she is oxygenating her blood (SpO2), the amount of CO2 she is breathing out (capnography), and her blood pressure.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Symptoms of Lyme disease in animals include fever, lameness, joint swelling, loss of appetite, decreased activity. It can take 2 -5 months for symptoms to present, and it is possible for all, one or no symptoms to show up. Even if the disease is asymptomatic, it can still lead to severe internal damage, ranging from arthritis to kidney failure, in the future. Treatment of Lyme disease includes a long course of antibiotics. It is always important to complete a prescribed course of antibiotics as directed until all of the medicine is gone. It is also important to then retest at the proper interval to ensure the disease is gone.
