I had a very bad experience with Colonial. I went by the reviews so I either had a uniquely bad experience or the reviews are not real.
It started with the original quote. I was given a transportation quote based on 3,000 lbs. to take my furnishings from Atlanta to Miami. About a week before the shipment, I was contacted by another representative who pretty much convinced me to increase my carton count by 30% to make sure I would not have trouble with space on the truck. This increase my cost by 100% but I didn't worry because I had my own count and weight which ended up being calculated at 3,800 lbs. I ended up with only 10% more cartons than originally quoted and about 500 lbs under the 3000 limit.
When they came to pick up my load, the truck only had 1/3 free space so my load had to wait about one hour IN THE STREET until a new truck arrived.
I was supposed to be called within 2 days to verify the actual weight (one weight in before the truck came and one after it was loaded). I did not get the total weight for 5 days. At this point I was told that actual weight was 3800 lbs. or the total estimated by the second agent. I contested this and as promised, I was invited to another weight in. I was at the initial weight in (about45' from my location). I was in the middle of a family emergency so I trusted the driver that he would send me the final weight in in a matter of hours. 4 hours later I received the final weight in and it TURNED OUT THAT MY LOAD WAS NOW 4,400 lbs. I am sure that they unloaded the last customer and weight the truck empty. Assuming that the other truck had ONLY 1000 lbs, my weight would not have passed 3,200 lbs.
I contacted ALL the people in Colonial with whom I had correspondence and didn't receive any reply from any of them. The agent in charge did send me an email informing me of the steps to follow in my 'upcoming' shipment.
As far as I'm concerned these company, or at least these group are crocks ...
