Primary Care
Working closely with colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, and primary care practitioners, Coastal Cancer Center uses advanced treatments and technologies to combat Colorectal Cancer. A patient’s multidisciplinary colon cancer treatment team generally includes a surgeon, medical oncologist, gastroenterologist and sometimes a radiation oncologist. Our cancer care team includes a variety of healthcare professionals, including physician assistants, nurse practitioners, oncology nurses, social workers, pharmacists, counselors, dietitians, laboratory technicians and medical assistants.

Cervical Cancer
For example, African Americans are more likely to develop breast and prostate cancer at a younger age than white women, and they are also more likely to die from the disease. Hispanic women are more likely to develop cervical cancer, and Asian Americans are more likely to develop liver cancer. When undergoing genetic testing for hereditary cancer, Black Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are more likely to receive a confusing test result known as a “variant of uncertain significance” — a change in a person’s DNA that has an unknown effect on their cancer risk. Additionally, Minorities are also more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at later stages when the disease is more difficult to treat. These disparities in cancer incidence and mortality are due in part to differences in access to quality health care, as well as socioeconomic factors such as poverty and education level.
Colon Cancer
Targeted therapy is a treatment that targets a cancer’s specific genes or mutation within a cancer cell. This type of treatment blocks the growth and spread of cancer cells and limits damage to healthy cells. Immunotherapy is designed to boost the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer. Types of immunotherapies used to treat colorectal cancer include Pembrolizumab, Nivolumab and Dostarlimab. These treatments are most often used to treat metastatic colon cancer with a marker indicating responsiveness.

Lung Cancer

At Coastal Cancer Center, our pathologist will closely examine the lung cancer cells and tumors to determine the type and treatment. There are two main types of lung cancer. They are called non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Another type, called lung carcinoid tumors, is less common.

Chemotherapy

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is another standard cancer treatment. It harnesses high-energy waves (X-rays, radioactive particles) to destroy or damage cancer cells. Radiation may be used in combination with other therapies to reverse the growth of cancer cells.
