Overall

I had high hopes for this establishment prior to reviewing it. This rating and review is based on food quality, quantity, and customer service, since I chose not to dine in house because of the wait for a table. Date of visit was 06/07/2013, after 7 pm, Saturday evening. The meal I ordered was the "world famous" Fried Oyster Dinner with Coleslaw and Onion Rings. I was greeted promptly when I entered but then when I told them I would place an order to take with me I was referred to a different section. The girl clearly didn't know the menu which was evident when I started asking questions. I asked about the coleslaw, which 3 employees standing up front said they didn't like...no points for promoting and standing behind the company product.. I was expecting them to promote it so when they didn't, I asked for a sample. They passed that test in that they did bring me a spoonful sized sample in a dish. The coleslaw was actually very good so I ordered it as a side item. Additionally I choose the onion rings. The oyster dinner is supposed to come with 12 oysters. I was very disappointed in these supposedly renowned oysters. They were very small and some were so thickly battered that the flavor and texture of the oysters was lost. I had to count twice to make sure there were 12 and some were almost exclusively batter. The taste and flavor of the batter was not bad, but was nothing that enhanced the meal either. The onion rings were great. They were lightly battered and had real onions, as opposed to minced processed onion flavored breading. I actually enjoyed the onion rings and coleslaw more than the oysters! The coleslaw was fresh and crisp, lightly seasoned and not goopy like some I have reviewed. I would recommend it. The hush puppies, again, were not bad, but there's nothing that made them any better than some fast food place like Captain D's. if I could upload a picture here I would post one of the oysters. I rated this establishment with 3 stars because while it is certainly not a bad place to try if you are in the area, I would be remiss for saying it is the best in quality or that you should go out of your way to try it. The front end of the house did not know the menu, nor did they stand behind the company product. They did not try and recommend or sell me anything such as an appetizer or dessert which is also not good for business. In fact, I was going to order the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer but when I asked about them I was told that it was 4 slices of tomatoes (for $7.99). I thought that was a bit pricey. However, as I waited, a table within my view ordered them and there were at least double that number on the plate...so lack of product knowledge up front cost the business a sale there. Cost of the dinner is $17.99 add an additional $1 for Onion Rings as a side. If you are looking for a restaurant type dining experience then you would likely enjoy this place. However if you are looking strictly for quality and taste of food without the dining experience, then check out Destin Connection (which I will be writing a review on next).

Finally, great Seafood in MGM

We have had the pleasure of dining at Wintzell's in Downtown Montgomery two times since it opened. Each time we received great service and excellent food. The Gumbo is the best I have ever tasted. The staff is friendly and very attentive. The location is right in the middle of all the fun downtown finally has to offer. We are hooked on Wintzell's.
