Tread carefully here and do not give your heart away too quickly

I attended RBC with some regularity 15 years ago and at a time when George Fountain was the Pastor. I found him to be a friendly, well-spoken leader. I also found him pretentious, bombastic, and self-serving. I recall one Sunday sermon in which he stated that Christians who do not tithe may not be genuine. This was in the context of a message that highlighted RBC's commitment to give a disproportionately high percentage to Baptist missions. He had obviously backed himself into a corner...view more with this commitment and was placing the burden on the backs of the church members/attendees, some of whom simply could not tithe.\r
In another incident, several of us had gathered near the rear of the church after a Sunday evening service and were talking. The conversation revolved around someone who was going to Wm. Tyndale Theological School. I asked a question that had something to do with the theological leaning of the school, whether Arminian, Calvinistic, or Dispensational. To this day I do not think of it as a stupid question but obviously George did because he answered the question sarcastically and (I know this is hard to believe - I didn't believe it nor did anyone else standing there) he smacked me across the back of the head - not hard enough to hurt but the mere act humiliated me. I stood there, looking around at shocked faces and George just laughed it off.\r
I left a few minutes later and never returned - neither to his church or to any other. To this day I feel as though there must have been something bad about me for him to have done this. I should have talked to him about it, I know. But I was too embarrassed and eventually too angry.\r
Aside from these two incidents, I found the church cliquey and without much depth behind the smiles. Though my departure left me spiritually empty, I never missed anyone from that church. Hard as I tried, in 4 months I never made a real friend.
