History of Plains Commerce Bank The roots of Plains Commerce Bank go back 75+ years. In 1931, the doors to Bank of Hoven opened in the community of Hoven, SD. Throughout the years, Bank of Hoven served many counties in the surrounding area. Then in 1987, the bank expanded its operations to include a Credit Card division, which offers secured and unsecured VISA¿ and MasterCard¿ credit cards. Bank of Hoven was rated as one of the top 5 banks in South Dakota in 2000 and has been rated as one of the top banks in the United States by various bank rating organizations for the past several years. In January 2001, the Bank of Hoven purchased and merged operations with The Peoples Bank, with offices in Aberdeen and Conde, South Dakota. The Peoples Bank was founded in 1926 in Conde and expanded to Aberdeen in 1984. With the merger came the need for a new name. The name, Plains Commerce Bank, was chosen because the word "Plains" symbolizes our place in this great nation and "Commerce" represents our core strengths on how we do business. In May of 2002, Plains Commerce Bank purchased the Marquette Bank in uptown Watertown, South Dakota. In September of 2003, a second Watertown branch was opened at the corner of Highways 81 & 212. The second location provided added convenience and service for our customers, along with the ability to do their banking during the extended business hours. In 2006, we celebrated our 75 years of community banking. At this time, we also opened our 6th location in South Dakota at 3905 West 49th Street, Sioux Falls.
