I always heard that even though both Milwaukee and Ozaukee were "No Kill Shelters" it wasn't actually true. But I never believed it, or didn't want to believe it because I just couldn't wrap my mind around how a "Humane" society could be killing innocent animals.
I didn't believe it until one of my coworkers gave up her dog so she could find a better family, but changed her mind over night and wanted to get the dog back first thing next morning. When she went back to see if she can adopt the dog back, they told her they had already put the dog down because she didn't pass the "tests". I am not sure how could they come to a conclusion to take an innocent life within 10 hours. After reading the reviews here and at other places, I don't believe they ran any tests at all.
Long story short, be careful if you are looking for a new home for your pet, because the chances are your pet will never get the new home it deserves. It is simply mid blowing and disgusting how inhumane this society actually is.
If these reviews aren't enough proof, read review by "Exposer" below who worked at the humane society and in her own words "Its disgusting the amount of animals they kill in a day." Hopefully more people acknowledge this and put a stop to this.
think twice before you go........i adopted a4 month old pit bull in january. we took her to puppy classes and by the second class we were discrimated against.we were asked to work with our puppy off on our own in another room so our pit would be more comfortable! later to make it right when i complained to the director we got private lessons to work with both our dogs in socializing.
this past week my husband took our pit back to the humane society to see if they could find her a home with no pets, our two dogs were just not getting along and we didn't want someone getting seriously hurt.first thing the next morning i couldn't stand it and reached out to the trainer ( which by the way never returned my call) and i went back to get my dog. i just couldn't give up on her. well they sure did. in less than 12 hours they put her down. she was a sweet dog and VERY people friendly.
she never stood a chance there, they NEVER even tried!!!! and they claim they don't breed discriminate!!!! I feel like i killed her by taking her there, it was a very hard decision to make and i don't think i can ever forgive myself for making it. i really and stupidly believed that they would help her not kill her!!!!!!!
I don't know the inter-workings of this facility like many claim; I do know that I had a great experience adopting my dog from this facility. First of all it was the cleanest and best maintained rescue shelter I have ever been too. Second, the dog I adopted was far from perfect (walker coonhound) and they told me it would be a long road to train him the way I wanted; they could have easily put him down for some of his behaviors but they didn't. I would adopt again from WIHS in a heartbeat and I suggest you visit them before buying from a pet store or a breeder, it was easy and thanks to them I get to come home from work to a wagging tail and happy eyes.
.Krista. If the WHS is such a wonderful Humane Society why would they sell you a dog that needed $1000 worth of medical in the first two weeks? They should have done a better job of accessing this dog. After all they refused surrender to a bow legged kitten. It didn't fit there image. Elmbrook was happy to adopt out this sweet little kitten
I took animals to the Milwaukee Humane Society (45th & Wisconsin) I am telling you these things because they don't!
1. Make SURE your animal has NO medical condition. We are not talking sick, that means some kind of pre-existing condition that may or may not need daily medication. They will not take the animal, or offer to KILL it, I am assuming for a fee.
2. If the "Humane" society decides your animal is "unadoptable" for any reason, you can take it back (for a fee, whatever they have done. medical costs, implant, etc.) They say they will "work with you" on this fee, This is after you have already paid $35 or more to surrender your animal If you do not take your animal back, they KILL it. What does "unadoptable" really mean? Does it mean noone took it within 30 days?
Another question I have is if they have vets onsite, and other professionals, why are animals passing illness back and forth. I was told the animals I surrendered would PROBABLY get sick because of THEIR population. Wouldn't you quarantine a sick animal?
They may take your animal, hopefully your animal will be adopted. But know before you go!!!!!! I guess I have to say my idea of "humane" and theirs are not the same.
Killing a perfectly well animal is wrong, and they seem to do this with no problem
Your complaint might be more believable if it hadn't been plagarized from the other complaint posted by your co-worker.
Our rescue has taken in many dogs that people surrendered to WHS only to get home and have WHS tell them that their dogs failed the "tests" and they are going to kill it if they don't come back with 75.00. One dog in particular was an 18 week old puppy that was brought there by a woman who bought it from a pet store. She thought WHS might help the dog. WRONG!!! They said $75.00 by 6pm or we kill her. This is a scam! They are cherry picking the cute ones and any of the dogs with problems (big or little) they kill them. This place is disguisting. They are not knowledgable when it comes to temperement testing these dogs. They kill way too many dogs and it needs to stop! They bought a puppy mill in 2008 and they kept the dogs in cages together to get more puppies out of them. No wonder they have 7 million in assets. UGH!!! I hate this place.
They are horrible. I worked at Ozaukee Humane Society which is run by WHS. We did all our training at WHS, took our animals there for spay/neueter, and picked up new animals from them. There is no compassion involved when it comes to the their "behavior department." Its disgusting the amount of animals they kill in a day. I want to expose them so badly to the media but don't know how to really. Especialy since Fox 6 and WHS are like best buddies. Any ideas?
