Business History
Hildegard Solzbacher and a small group of committed parents founded Milwaukee Montessori School in 1961. The School began with one classroom of children ages 3-6, and was housed in space rented from Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The School quickly outgrew its space in the church basement, and within two years of its founding moved to an empty public school building at 4610 W. State St., along with the 65 children enrolled. The School’s continued success and enrollment growth created the need for yet more space. In 1980, the elementary levels moved to a separate location at St. Rose School on 31st and Clybourn. Having independent campuses was not desirable and in 1996, the building Milwaukee Montessori School now inhabits, a prior church school, was purchased. In the fall of 1998, the doors opened after a major redesign project, for which it won numerous awards. MMS was featured in the June 2000 issue of Architecture Magazine and in November received the Mayor’s Design Award.

Associations
Accreditation status indicates that a college or private school meets the standards of quality set by an impartial accrediting organization in terms of faculty, curriculum, administration, finances, and student services. Accrediting bodies continually monitor and assess their accredited schools, thereby ensuring that the schools are delivering on their missions. Milwaukee Montessori School is one of only eleven private schools in Wisconsin to be accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, one of the most rigorous accrediting bodies in the country. It is one of eight schools in the state to belong to the National Association of Independent Schools, and one of five schools in the state to have earned membership in the Educational Records Bureau.

Overall

The childcare program is very impressive. It provides a fun and safe environment with just the right balance of structure and play. My children are constantly coming home with crafts and art projects that they’ve made while attending, and most of the time they don’t want to come home! The staff is extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and great with kids. The kids also spend a lot of time outdoors being physically active, and I like knowing my kids are getting enough exercise. So far my 5 year old son has learned how to play Uno and checkers from other kids while attending, and he’s starting to pick up how to play chess. There is definitely a culture of learning and inclusion among the kids, and the positive energy is palatable. I highly recommend it.
